Page-Zone's server status page is *still* showing 5 servers down.

That assumes the red pentagon means "down" -- it's not like there's
actually a legend for symbols.

The last announcement on that page is from the first week of September.

There have been announcements in October (I've seen them), but I think
they've lost part of their own databases in the last weeks, so it's
showing old information. Same goes for the helpdesk tickets of the
past weeks. Old tickets are still there, more recent ones had vanished
when PZ's site came back online.

I was on the phone with Jim last Wednesday as I was moving my sites to a
different host.

The short explanation is that for the last 4 years Jim has been leasing
servers from a company that did not invest in maintaining their servers.
He is now buying his own servers and moving everything to a different
data center. He is trying to stay ahead of server crashes. It doesn't
look like he is being terribly successful.

Once the dust settles, if you stay with Page-Zone through this, hosting
at Page-Zone should be more stable. If you are not already on one of the
new servers, things could be rough for a while.

Two sites on 18. So far they don't seem to have gone tits-up during this
mess...er...changeover. I don't know if that means I didn't notice a
short outage, that it's not been messed...er...upgraded yet, or that
it's been moved without problems.

It's the only way to go. Good luck to him - hope it works out.

Unfortunately, dust beginning to rise in the first place should be the
cue to find a new host. It certainly was for me. As soon as I noticed
that there were problems with their other servers and their own
homepage, combined with a noticeable degradation in server response over
the last few months, I initiated the moving of all of my sites.

I really do try to keep ahead of things by moving at the first signs of
trouble, and so far it has worked pretty well.

OK, who do you now use as a host?

I'm using AxisHOST. I had no problems with AffordableHOST before the
sale to DotCanada, and therefore find the management of Axis to be
nothing but professional, and reliable. So far, I wouldn't hesitate to
recommend them --- especially if you were/are an AH customer, as you can
take advantage of the 2for1 offer they have.

no email + no server status + nobody answers the phone + no response from
support = time for new host

Anyone have recommendations for office-conference-project hosting plans?

requirements for my online design business -

most important:
- reliable email
- actual support, not black hole for support tickets like page-zone

also important:
- protected project areas with folders, document storage I can share with
clients
- project status/schedule calendar
- customizable appearance (my logo on everything... :)

nice to have as well:
- invoicing and account info for clients per project
- video conferencing
