Heidi

I have received a prorated refund from 2checkout and I am moving to
beachcomber.net
Nothing much will be different except the reseller plan is more expensive
but not too much more. =)

So there will be some downtime, which includes the aww faq website as well,
but things will be back to normal again after a few days. =)

What did it take to get the refund?

well it took about a week and I had to find and forward all my email
receipts regarding the payment.
They attempted to email MIS twice on my behalf requesting a partial refund.

The second time they told me if I didn't hear anything within 48 hours to
call them back and they would confirm the money I was owed, prorated, and
initiate the refund. Of course I didn't and the emails sent to MIS bounced.

It will take a few days to be refunded back to my account, 3-7 business
days, but then I will have that money back to reimburse me for my first 6
month payment to beachcomber.net

That is about it :) Feel free to ask me anything else you might want to know

Thanks Heidi. I just reviewed my records and it looks like I haven't
made any payments to MIS since I first opened the account in Jan 2005,
so I guess I should let it slide. :-)

Maybe that's why they couldn't pay their bills?

Let's get this straight....

"Family business brought to its knees by cheapskate AWW regular"

"Struggling small business fails after millionaire customer refuses to
pay bill"

"Cast out on the street that fat cats can get fatter"

Am I close?

I'd even offered to renew in March or whenever they were running their
50% promotion, but Allis refused to take my money since they were
still working on a ticket that'd been open for months regarding a
borked up phpbb instance or something.

So, I think we have the answer as to why they went under. A warm body
chartered with doing some accounts receivable and invoicing would've
been very helpful to them, I imagine.

Careful, Els. Two years ago, everyone was happy with Tina. A year ago,
everyone was happy with Allis. ;)

I had nothing but good things to say about pre-sale AH but I'm afraid
that I'm with Todd about the idea of going back. As to MIS, at least I
didn't lose any money when they crapped out. My year expired in August
and was never submitted for renewal by them.

There is a huge difference between Tina and Allis in this respect.
Tina for one, never stopped responding to questions. She has been open
about what happened, and except for poor judgement on who she sold the
company to, imo the troubles were not her fault, but DotCanada's.

Of course these thoughts passed my mind before I decided to go back.
But I reckon that just like last time, Tina will notify her clients of
a sale, right after it is a fact. That is still soon enough to switch
to a new host if I have any doubt at all about the new owner of the
company. What I've learned from last time is not that Tina is a bad
host (on the contrary), but that I should not automatically trust
whoever buys my host's company.

I have never understood why people took Tina's sale of her last company
as some kind of betrayal. It's just business.

I feel the same way about Allis and what has happened to MIS. Shit
happens. Deal with it and don't take it personally.

own company) against her personally.

Allis and MIS were just idiots.

Tina seemed to have a plan and the mechanisms of business kept folks
in the dark about an overshit shitacularization of a once esteemed
brand. Yeah, it's business but when someone else's business
decisions make my business's reputation look bad, that's when shit
gets personal. :-)

Besides, it's fun to relive the bitterness.

That's rather harsh. Allis got seriously hurt and was laid up. I think

I understand, but consider what you would do if you had built a
successful business and someone came along and offered you a big basket
of money for it. You can extract some meaningless promises from your
buyer about maintaining high levels of service for your existing
customers, but you would have no way to enforce that.

I think most of us fault Allis less for MIS having problems than for
the total lack of communication. A post to her customers would have
gone a long way towards ameliorating many (though, of course, not all)
people's bitterness. Most of us understand that people fall on hard
time and businesses fail.

Abandoning customers without so much as an email saying "sorry, out of
business, you'd better download your stuff and find a new host" has
hurt her reputation. Notice would have saved her customers much
uncertainty, anguish, and lost business/revenue generated much less
hard feelings.

I hope that Allis recovers speedily and completely.

Maybe.

Not sure when where and how she got laid up (shocking, I'm sure since
communication was their strong suit...or, err, not), but failing to
invoice your customers, and consistently screwing up cpanel updates
resulting in down time then lying about downtime when in fact you're
not paying your bills is not the brightest of exit plans.

I understand that too. And I'd fully expect a subset of the customers
to have a long memory for having been sold for a big basket of money,
while I had to be slightly devious and not tell the customers why
service was going downhill in teh weeks leading up to the official
sale.

Calculated risk for a profit. The customer lost. Tina won. I'd
like to take an edge off that win and back in teh little guy's favor
in my usual consumer advocate idiom. :-)

So did we ever figure out what happened to MIS? My websites came back
a few days after the whole cpanel debacle so I thought things were
good again since my sites were working.

Then yesterday I was digging around here and webhostingtalk and found
the post by beachcomber that he brought the servers owned by him and
leased by MIS back up until the 21st for people to retrieve thier
data. Good thing I found that YESTERDAY and not today. I spent all
afternoon/evening doing last miute backups of my databases and files.

Now I'm without host for those sites, but have sent an email to
beachcomber to test his response speed ;) and inquire about a thing or
two, mainly being the "shared" IP thing, i need 1 dedicated IP for an
SSL and i'm not sure if the shared means shared by whole server, or by
my reseller account.

It's a shame that she didn't announce the sale. If she had, she would
have avoided the damage to her reputation that has now occurred.
Virtually everyone has thought she was still the owner.

Seems rumor has it Allis sold the hosting business after an accident.

As to beachcomber.net I am with them now and so far so great.
Support has been great also and readily available. =)

That would totally explain it. Robert, their lead tech under Allis's
rein had the organizational and communication skills of a mop handle.
He was the guy whose voice was on the outgoing announcement. He had
about as much customer service and business sense as the keyboard I'm
typing on.

Seemed to be a nice enough guy, but more of the sort you'd like to
have a beer with than do business with.

It was me who posted that info, D. It was sent to me by private email
from another host, who knows Allis.

Now I'm really p*ssed off.

Honestly, the number of times I've dropped the FBHint that there's money
waiting here for hosts - not interested why they're bailing, just the
facts.

It's enough to turn a chap to spam ;)

They must not know her or the situation too well then.

The email I got from Allis friday doesn't even come close to anything
that's rumored to have happened.

Appears to just be one sad story, and a serious timing XXXXup.

The sellout rumor doesn't fit in with the last email I got from Robert
either.

I don't know how well they know each other.

So can you give correct details, and put it to rest?

I think I'll check with her first if that's allright ;)

Or you could just email her. She's posted her personal here
before. That's where I got it. Sometime last year from archives.

I will go ahead and say though, there was no sell out, and if what her
providers did to them for what I understand was a combination of a 24
hour overdue small invoice and a decline on a $26 charge for some
addon, I think I would be arranging a hit right about now.

Phone, anything serious like that is via phone. Part of is was via email
though like forwarding them my proof of the correct dates of service,
payments etc. and the return email from them stating my refund was in
process etc. Things like that.

She eloped with Willy.

Now that's a rumor worth spreading.

Wouldn't get to Gretna Green in that traffic.

FWIW: no mail from either Robert or Allis here for weeks - but I wouldn'=

expect any. The nameservers for themooseisloose.net are still AWOL.

My site was on the same server as themooseisloose.net. I contacted
Linux-Tech to see if my files would have to be moved if I signed up with
him. He said the server had already been reformatted and resold;
10/09/06 conversation. Of course themooseisloose.net could surface on
some other server but not likely.
