Author OT? A marketing question
Lori

2005-09-24, 6:20 pm

Hey guys, I'm looking for opinions again :-)

I just created a "link network" on my site, and I was hoping for some
feedback. Here it is: http://www.eyardsale.com/help/links.asp

I'm really NOT a marketing expert and could use some guidance. Please let
me know what you think .

Thanks in advance

I know - having just read about it over there ---->

When you get round to researching 'oe quotefix', perhaps you could also
research the benefits of cross-posting as compared to the considerably
less efficient multi-posting.

links, in and out, work best for you when they are relevant to the content
on your page. I guess it depends on the motivation for the link. Mine
are placed to give sites a start with the spiders, they really don't need
to live much longer than a week or two, but often I leave them around for
a bit longer if they're useful to the target visitor (possibly myself <g> ).

Some folk spend a lot of time/energy collecting inbound links in the hope
it will raise their serps profile.

The link text is important and frankly each page needs to be carefully
considered.

In your case: I think it would be worth trying to get links from sites
that address local (to you) issues.

Got quote fix (Dylan advised me about it already) - but keep forgetting to
open it, instead of my regular express. I'll do better next time (head
hanging in shame).

As for cross posting - I do, however I create *special* messages for this
group :-)

I've done my home work - thank you very much, but I when I asked my question
I was actually looking for some expert opinions (like William's response).
I have no problem admitting that I'm new at this and don't see an issue with
asking for guidance.

Oh - and thank you very much for taking some of the fun out of our game. I
feel much more in my place now.

Without even looking I can see one serious weakness in the idea. You are
losing just about every single possible advantage you might gain from the
links when it comes to the search engines. DON'T separate links from
content, search engines will rate both links and content as less important
of you do so. Organise outbound links so that they are on pages that have
relevant content and with relevant link text. NEVER call a page or a
directory "links".

There's also a problem for a user of the site. By and large they aren't
going to your site to look for "links". They won't find the links useful
unless you organise them in a way that places relevant links on the page
at which the user will realise the link might be useful.

Looks perfectly good to me, linked from your help page.

Links aren't a big deal, I find the links pages are usually the quietest
on a site. You will read a lot of hocus-pocus about search engine
ranking and links, most of which you should ignore.

I would leave it as it is, and get on with the the stuff that really
matters!

It's really disheartening for me to see a post like his, and new people
could be turned away from this forum if they receive that kind of a response
(I almost unsubscribed to this group after seeing his response). People like
him are really quite sick. Anyone who enjoys hurting others should take up
a new hobby - I suggest self-mutilation.

I come from a background of sharing knowledge with others, not withholding
it from them. This forum has been an excellent source of guidance for me,
and I listen to people's responses to my questions, and implement their
suggestions into my site. There are SO many awesome and helpful people who
use this forum - and I am grateful to them for sharing their expertise.

Everyone is a "newb"at some point, and learning is a never ending process.
It's so sad that people like him want to ruin it for others.

This is usenet. Sooner or later you get thumped by some prick or some
pedant. I get thumped myself every now and then (today!, in another group)
and I consider myself a regular. You just have to get used to it. Break out
your tinfoil hat and your sense of humour, or your sense of the ridiculous
and take in your stide :-)

Indeed.

Even for a !newb there is still a lot to learn, and a lot to learn from this

Whilst making it absolutely clear that I am not refering to Mr Sweeney, I

Actually this was not the "best" one from the shoot, it's the one that I
felt the most comfortable posting to the web. There are several other shots
in different poses, and some outdoor shots that were also amazing.

Nicole and I spent about 4 hours taking pictures of each other, and shot
about four rolls of film. Taking the outdoor shots was really funny. We
were in a relatively public location (but no one was around). Taking turns,
we'd get undressed, pose, and them scramble to get back into our clothes.
LOL

There could be a plan formulating as we speak! Any great suggestions guys?
Just me? Nicole? Other women? if yes, do you know anyone who would submit
their pictures? If I build it will you visit? Trashy suggestions will be
placed where they belong - in the garbage.

No promises at this point - just collecting information - and thinking about

Seconded. No matter how artistic your pictures are, if you put a
collection of them online they will still be viewed by many as softcore
pornography (and treated as such by dirty boys).

One picture on its own, to me at least, does look artistic, but half a
dozen or more (or less maybe?) will look like a porn gallery.

Exactly. It'll be hard ensuring that you do it tastefully, and even if
you reach a point where you think it is, I have no doubt that others
will still treat it as porn. Put bluntly, do you really want to have a
bunch of dirty old men jacking off over pictures of you and Nicole?

First of all if you don't know I am Filipino so if I don't english this
correctly please forgive me.

I think you should do what you want to. If it is alright with your
husband, then I would encourage you to do this. I have read what charles
and Dylan has said and I very much disagree. You are a very beautiful
woman how could your photo be interpreded as porn? There are a lot of
artistic photos and most are not offended. You will always have the nasty
ones that Dylan is talking about, pay them no mind. Just think of the
enjoyment you and your friend may get from this experience. We Filipinos
like to have a experience with most things so are willing to try new
things, some work out and some do not but that is how life works. The
Filipino society is very different from the West. For example you may see
women breast feeding children in public, it is a natural thing and we
here are not the least offended. Similairly your photos are of a
natural and beautiful art form, so why is it bad if you wish to express
that? It is not, and it is only natural, that is the way life works.

It's not that it doesn't happen in the West. I've seen two women breast
feeding in public over the last few weeks; one was on the beach, and the
other was in the dinosaur exhibit of the Natural History Museum (!) in
London. Of course, if that sort of thing happened all the time then I
probably wouldn't have remembered or even noticed it.

But does it happen all the time?
My example is that it happens everyday here, all the time and again we
think that it is only natural and there is no shame.

AOL (no, I don't mean I'm Filipino)

If it's something you want to do, I'd say go ahead. The others make some
valid observations, but beauty, as well as porn, is in the eye of the
beholder. You have the opportunity to add some beauty to the world. Sure,
there may be some who find it who will view it otherwise, but that's
always the case. Some, to this day, would consider L'Origine du Monde to
be porn, but I think it's one of the most compelling pieces of art ever
created:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%E2%80%99Origine_du_monde (nudity)

If it's something you want to do, don't let what others may think change
your mind. Likewise, if it's something you're not comfortable with, then
don't let someone else make you feel like you should.

I was happy to read that that's probably not another "Whistler's Mother"

That would be a little too kinky. :)

I prefer the sheer beauty of the ravaging woman in "American Gothic". I

You make some very valid points here. In North America, woman have been
totally objectified though media, advertising, etc for decades. The human
body is beautiful (both male and female) and it is perfectly natural. We
seem to lean towards a more conservative perspective about art and the human
body. And then there are those who take it to an extreme and view all
nudity as porn.

Another point - I breastfed my son in public once. I could not believe how
both men and women looked at me. Actually, I shouldn't say "Looked" it was
more like leered, gawked, ogled (sp?), etc. I couldn't believe their
reactions to the most natural thing in the entire world...

This IS an amazing and compelling piece of art. I don't understand why a
celebration of women's beauty and form could be undermined in such a way -
but then again I am a girl and lacking in testosterone :-)

I'm actually thinking about a happy-medium type of scenario. Nicole and I

I can only speak for myself, but I've breastfed both my kids, and I'd
just do it whenever they were hungry. Never had any strange looks that
I remember really, the only thing I found weird were the women who
asked me if the kid wasn't too old for it. (I didn't stop after the
all too common "obligatory" 3 months)

No idea - please elaborate..
"Bitty"? Is that about kids biting when they get teeth? They don't
really - once they understand that biting means no milk, they learn
very quickly. I was bitten only once, and in a reflex I squeezed the
boy's face quite firmly - he was shocked and never did it again. Was
before teeth btw :-)

No - it's the boy's pet name for his mother's breast.

The boy is in his late 20s and the scenes always include his fiance and
occasionally her parents.

Well a lot of American's would imagine the British with a stiff upper
lip still, whereas their country is far more Victorian in attitude. For
example, in Britain we can swear and show our arses[1] on TV!

No charles, as usual you take thing out of context.

With all the negative responses she got I wanted to present the other side.

The only favourite pet of my is living life the way it should be, to the
fullest and knot so much as living life according to the others.

Life is beautiful and most people are beautiful, I won't let a few rotten
apples spoil life for me nor should it spoil others life.
