| I've been up the last hour and a half. Woke at 3am .. damn.. checked the
clock again .. it's now 2 hours.
Almost went for a bike ride as the roads are clear, but just started
thinking instead. <slowly>
Anyway, just as a thought, I want to use subdomains on my site e.g.
myplace.local-restaurant.com and think I have that sorted using wildcard
domains on my shared hosting deal. However am now thinking that personalised
email would be cool too e.g. myplace@local-restaurantgetridofme.com.
However not running my own server is a pain because if I have to move server
it'll prove a nightmare. I'm using site5, but am thinking VPS is the way
forward. Any suggestions on what I should be using for a real service as my
own server as a dedicated server is still a little out of reach.
Thanks.
(I really want my bed again, but another cup of tea may be the case).

Extra thoughts ... 2nd cup of tea needs to be made ... <puts kettle on>

Maybe what I could do is put all non-directed mail into a mysql database and
then redirect it from there? Still, it sounds like I'm using a sledgehammer
to open a door. Bugger. I need access to my conf files.

ok - take yerself down the road to Dorking, then find your way to the top
of that big hill
set your gaze to the middle distance overlooking the Sussex Downs and
consume your favourite narcotic until you have the solution - Tea works

The key to success is documentation - so long as you keep a record of all
entries/values, the pain will be minimised.

Out of reach? Perhaps a business course should be considered to
supplement those IT courses? Or failing that, a business partner.

Matt, your reply seems one of the rudest things that has been said to me in
a long while. Consider me now officially pissed off with you. No, not pissed
off, rephrase that. I think you're a ****.
You are obviously so capabale, congratulations. If I came in here and asked
basic HTML questions would I get shot down as quickly by a ****** such as
you?
When I say out of reach, money is directed elsewhere (think salaries). I
have a limited IT budget which I need to often spend on equipment. Shared
hosting is generally fine, and a step up to a full server is a big, big
step. I came in here asking IT advice, but all I got was a snotty playground
response. You can shove that up your ****.
r.e. business partners. One of the company directors is an ex-director of
three blue chip companies. Minted too. However, I have agreed to a certain
level and find that it is better to work around problems than just
continually throw money at it. I asked as a friend and leave as an enemy.

Not going there. My parents live at the bottom. It'll involve having to see
them.
Off down the Thames path on a bike later though.

Yes, I agree with this, however I'll just store all the required info in a
database.
In fact, that's exactly how I will solve this. I will process all incoming
email via a script and forward to them via a stored email address. It just
occured to me, and yet is so simple. I've done stuff like it before, and
just need to hack a previously written script.
I hate asking questions when I'm half asleep as you get (usually) funny

hrmm - if you have to set up all the mailboxen anyhow, wouldn't it be just
as easy to set them up as forward aliases in the first place?
Aha - the flame is dim this morning. You're gonna set up a catch-all and
post-process?

Nah, but a stones throw away. It's a great cycle via Epsom, via the Downs
and up the back of Juniper hill. It's a toughie though. I also went there
via the Thames Path to Guildford and along the North Downs. Now that really
was a tough cycle. Those Downs should renamed Ups and Downs.

Yes. It's the most transferrable method. If I have to move server again it
should be easy to re-implement. I can store all the forwarding addresses in
a backend databsae. I don't use the domains for email at all at the moment.
So, a simple catch-all and forward post process. It seems so easy now. I'd
only had three hours sleep when I woke earlier. I am one of those, "well if
i'm awake I might as well do something" type persons. Unfortunately that
sometimes means asking questions before I've even thought it through myself.
Should be easy enough though.

Yeah yeah yeah.....
You're such a major business you can not afford $99 a month for a
dedicated server!
There's a funny smell around here, could it be the unmistakable odour
of an analy retentive, teenage geek? No, it's bullshit!
So if you don't understand basic business, learn. But don't pretend to

There is a difference between a noun and a verb.
To hump (verb) is to have sexual intercourse
Tp have the hump (noun) is to be fed up, agitated, irritated.
Now, as well as learning the basics of business, may I suggest you
also:
1) learn to spell (you should have said 'shitycyclopaedia' it's more
correct and more poetic)
2) learn British slang (I recommend the Probert Encyclopaedia)
3) Learn how to speak English

If you don't like the answers, don't ask questions.
Any 'business' that can not afford $99 a month (or less) is *NOT* a
business! Any person claiming to be running a business when they are
not, and gets caught out should either exclaim 'fair cop' or shut up.

Why? Any old computer in the closet because it wont run the latest games
can be a server.
Im not sure what all you are using it for but generally 1/10th of the
computer you use as a desktop, using free linux and running off of a DSL,
can be server enough for 100 people. A little more computer required if you
are determined to use Windows as a server OS.

You are certainly going to meet this "teenage geek" if you carry on being

You're making threats against the guy, and now they're documented on Usenet.

You didn't read the thread properly then.
a/ I worked out when I had a proper nights sleep that it more than possible
to do what I want on the service I currently have.
b/ there is no neded to pay 7 times the amount per month if what I have is
perfectly capable. Sometimes I need to work around limitations, but that is
part of the work.
c/ you have no idea whatsoever of this businesses income. So you are talking
out of your arse. Again.

So, explain to me what the word 'Tp' is if you're so clever. Get a
spellchacker, twat.
Also, explain to me how I can misspell a word that I invented.
Do you not recognise English? This is English. What other language is it?
Please explain without looking like a complete tosser. If possible.

It wasn't a threat. He said that I'm a teenage geek. I said that I could be
anyone, any size, any ability. This is usenet, therefore I could be an axe
murderer or a 95 year old granny.
He is fully aware from this thread and previous threads that I live within

It's necessity over requirements. When I went back to bed and had a proper
sleep It was clear that it's a very simple thing to do using a catchall
address and back end scripts via cron jobs. There is no requirement to spend
5 times the amount per month for a dedicated server which will be signed up
to a longer contract than a shared hosting deal which doesn't tie in for
long periods. Hoever the mention of VPS's in an earlier thread was
interesting, and that was what I was enquiring about.

I play nicely with everyone that plays nicely with me. It's just Matt in his
"better than you" world that started playing badly and has annoyed me. Now
Steve comes wading into something that has nothing to do with him and makes
himself look as closed minded as Matt.
Why did Matt turn around and say that I shouldn't do things if I'm crap at
it? How did he learn in the first place?
I find it a personal attack, and in no way helpful or constructive? I must
admit that there are a million and one things I cannot do. But if I can't do
something I need to do, then I'll read, discuss and learn. That's what I
thought was the nature of this group. Reading, discussing and learning.
