Author IE 5.2 for Mac CSS float problem (works when border enabled)...

hi,

I have some code that works in all web browsers except IE 5.2 for Mac
(heard this one before? :-)

the CSS code basically creates two id's, one is a container for the
other. eg:

CSS Code:
....
#main
{
background-image: url(../images/background_2.jpg );
width: 550px;
height: 390px;
margin: 30px auto 0 auto;
padding: 0;
border: 0px solid orange;

}

#main_scroll
{
overflow: auto;
float: left;
width: 550px;
max-width: 550px;
height: 310px;
margin: 40px 0 0 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0px solid orange;
}

....
HTML Code:
....
<div id="main">
<div id="main_scroll">
main stuff...
</div>
</div>
....

basically, main creates a box 550px wide and 390px high, then inside
this box should sit main_scroll, which will contain information that
may need to be scrolled...

This code works on all browsers, except IE for Mac AND works on IE for
Mac when I set "border: 1px..." on main_scroll. I don't understand why
IE for Mac doesn't position this correctly when there is no border - it

simply lines up the main_scroll box with the main box - instead of
having it sit inside the main box, 40px down...

thanks in advance.

yep - unfortunately

I suspect you will probably have to wait till our Els returns from her
travels - should be any day now. Of course I may be mistaken, but I don't
know many that can visualise the quirks of this browser without a neural
uplink.

but ....

This is usually regarded as a bad thing (tm)

Are you sure there is no other presentation which would suit/complement
your content?

Yesterday evening that is :-)

Not sure if you're saying I have a neural uplink, or that I manage to
visualize the quirks without one ;-)
(to the OP: I don't have a Mac either)

I don't know why the border makes it work on your page, but it is
quite a common hack on WinIE as well. It seems to literally set the
boundaries for an element, and keeps margins of child elements inside.
Changing those margins usually makes the hack unnecessary.

Instead of the border, often a simple height or width value does the
same trick. Not in your example though, as you already set those.
May I ask why you set float:left to the #main_scroll ?
MacIE has quite a few quirks with floats, although I think they're
mainly to do with right floated elements, not left floated ones.

Are those really marshmallows those grommets are incinerating?

If so you need a rather smaller furnace, they'll be overdone (the
marshmallows, not the grommets) :-)

Cheers

It was quite a luxe campsite - free use of fridge, freezer, microwave
and great big lump of iron including big wet blocks of wood <g>

Yup - said so on the packet :-)

Grommets? Australian slang for muppets maybe? ;-)

AFAIK there's two ways of (over)doing marshmallows (I really thought
it was mellow instead of mallow :\ ) - one is to just warm it up till
'done', which means holding it near the fire, not in it, and the other
is to purposely burn it, eat the burnt crust, and do it again, which
has an element of competition: 'who can peel the most skins off their
marshmallow'.

Both kids were aiming for the former, though one didn't quite get the
difference initially :-)
