| Hello-
Question for web masters who have their own businesses.
I have a client who's sites I built and who's sites I host.
The client was 3 months late making hosting payments and also owed a
few hundred for updates to her site. After repeated billing, she
continued not to pay. After the 3rd month, I shut her site off.
To me, it seems it is my right to do this. Afterall, if you don't pay
for service, you get no service.
I read yesterday in a book about web design and home business that the
approach I used could be illegal.
Do you have any thoughts on that?

Hopefully you just suspended and didn't delete the site.
Hopefully she will realize that if you don't pay the Cable bill, you don't
get to watch the show.

Though not a lawyer, I don't see how it could be illegal.
Presumably you have an agreement (contract), and is she breaches it, you can
take action but stopping providing the services.
I would agree that you should probably suspend her site rather than remove
it, but other than that, I think you hold all the cards.

Step #1 - disable smtp
step #2 - disble pop/imap
step #3 - disable web
which reminds me ... using exim, is there a way to limit outgoing mail to
10 (or 100 for example) per day by domain? would be useful for unverified
accounts.

Chk your Exim config file ;)
cPanel has an Auto set for the domain limiting. I think it just writes it
there.

This I can do - did, and din't see anything obvious, but ok, I'll go back
and seek some more.

cPanel? yukkie pooo. While acknowledging the apparent necessity for some
sort of user interface - I am fairly disillusioned with all CP software,
particularly with the environmental constraints imposed by them.

My own host uses H-Sphere and I've been very happy with it. (Yesh, I have
used the cPanel interface as well)

For admining a server - cPanel is horrid. DIY, IMO.
However, for the end-user hosting customer...cPanel is generally very much
appreciated for the convenience of doing things like adding email accounts,
installing things like message boards, managing their overall account, etc..

exactly! and there's a lot to be said for diversity

the mind boggles at what you could possibly mean by that ;)

I have a gui that sits on top of exim for mailbox management.
Resellers/customers/users (apparently) love it, but it's a b*gger to use
as admin. In fact it does need updating, but I believe the driving force
behind it got a day job or similar.
