Any Yahoo Groups/MSN Groups or similar where you can post by email?
|
|
|
| I think that says it all.
A paid service or application would be fine.
It's for a group of CEOs to swap ideas and to collaborate, so it needs to be
easy to use (and administrate), reliable and ideally will allow members to
email posts (rather than use web-front end)
Any suggestions?

Sounds like you need a mailing list, rather than a 3rd party "group".

Is there any reason not to use Yahoogroups then? The lists are really
easy to set up, plus it provides places to share files, links, photos,
etc.

The 'requirements' we have are still rather whoolly; but I think there still
needs to be a web presence - ie a place where you can post files of various
descriptions - so I'm not sure if a mailing list is ideal.

That's how they work. They're like any other email list - you send an
email and it gets sent to all the other group members. Members have
the option of getting each post as it's sent, getting the list in
digest form (one message/day with all the previous day's posts), or
reading them from the website.

| P.S. Just go to yahoogroups.com and read what they have to say. It's
free to set up a group, so just follow the instructions and then take
a look around.

So set your subscription to email or digest!
I agree that I don't like reading off the web with them. OTOH, for
the OP's purposes, I think that it would work well - Yahoogroups tend
to be easy for computer newbies to use and are minimal work for the
listowner. They can be set to be private (invitation only) and also
have chat capability.
I run email lists on Yahoogroups, Lyris and a couple of other systems,
and the Yahoogroups are absolutely the least amount of work for me.

Re-read my OP.
It says the users want to post via email - not email each other. There will
likely be a need for a web presence where posts can be viewed (and made) and
other documents can be shared, but I suspect that the users wont always want
to log on to the site to post/read posts and therefore the ability to send &
receive emails may be useful.

Read my subsequent posts. We don't have any firm requirements yet. I'm
trying to find out what it already out in the market place, so I can advise
my CEO accordingly.

I thought you could only receive emails from Yahoo... but I'll take your
advice and dig a little deeper
Cheers

Not particularly in reference to this thread, but two thoughts occur
o bouncing ideas off usenet is a useful method of finding out what is
already available - it may fold nicely back into the requirements
definition process
o IME nobody ever knows what they want until they have something to kick
against - which is why (in a fit of desperation for some small guideline)
we once made a site template with a "makin' bacon" logo.

How do you think you receive them? Someone has to send them ;^)
You can set up a Yahoogroup to be announcements-only, but they have a
wide variety of options.
If you prefer Google to Yahoo, I imagine that Google groups are
probably pretty similar.

Plus I'm dealing with CEOs - requirements are usually defined AFTER you have
gone live, and will move, should you ever get near to meeting them.
Therefore, my approach is to research a variety of options, and present them
to the boss, and he can pick one - much simpler!

No, you mail them to groupname@yahoogroups.com
