| Hi all,
I decided I wanted to learn HTML properly, so I designed a fansite for one
of my favourite actors, Steve McQueen.
I am unfortunately having some problems with my "film" section. Various
people have reported it erroring out when they try to open it. I have had
similar problems. It errors out, but if i click "back" it is OK-the page is
there. It seems to happen to some degree with all the links within the film
section.
It doesn't happen in any of the other areas in the site.
I am hoping some of you here might have a quick look at my HTML and tell me
if you can see what the reason might be (my webspace provider has not been
much help).
Best,
Darren Wright.

Would that be the "Film & TV" section? I get it fine with Firefox,
Windows XP.
Just a quick look, but you don't appear to have closing tags </a> for
your links, or </h2> for your <h2>s.
Try running it through an HTML checker.

ok - assuming http://www.mcqueenonline.com
first thing to do when debugging is to ensure you are using valid markup.
Take a gander here: http://validator.w3.org/ and come back with
specifics if you don't understand what it's telling you.

I can see many issues but my brain won't parse broken markup, so fix it
first.

Would you really expect them to help with a markup issue?

Try to fix your errors with the help of the W3C Validator first (there
is 176 of them on the front page alone):
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbo...e.com/index.htm
And a couple of CSS errors as well:
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/...e.com/index.htm
Then come back if you still have any problems with the site.

Steve passed away a long time ago, so he won't be able to help you learn
HTML properly. Come to think of it, he couldn't have helped you anyway,
since he died before it was invented. Oh, how I hate to be the bearer
of bad news! But I knew nobody else would shoulder the responsibility.

| Hi Charles,
yes, it's the"film and TV" section. Now that you point it out I see that I
don't have the closing tags you mention on the main page, but once you enter
the "film and TV" section I think I do have them. Regarding not having them
on the main page, they aren't on any of the links, yet it is only the "film
andTV" section that errors, so I guess that isn't the reason?
Thanks,
Darren.

| Thanks all,
I'll check these programmes you mention out.
I have made this site without any programme assistance (used HTML Kit) but
wrote it myself based on tutorial websites. So I don't know how they work,
but will give it a go.
Best,
Darren.

Don't you mean the "Film & TV" section? I'm deliberately being pedantic
to make the point that when you are coding anything, you have to pay
attention to every detail, so it's a good habit to get into.

You need to fix all the coding errors first before even beginning to
look for solutions to apparent navigation problems.
Just a point, try not to top-post your replies. There is a convention
here for bottom posting, wouldn't like you to fall foul of the posting
police!

You know, as much as I value learning stuff, I'd rather have a day that
I laughed so much I *didn't* learn anything than one where I didn't have
time to laugh at all.

It functions here. Though still needs a lot of work done on it, most
notably setting a default background colour.

I have removed 122 errors from my main page www.mcqueenonline.com based on
the above site.
However there are 54 errors remaining and they all relate to the amazon and
allposters ad links.
Are these errors beyond my control? Or would they be something that you
would try to fix?
Thanks,
Darren.

Simply replace each "&" in your links with "&", and those error
messages should go away.
http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/valid...oblems.html#amp
On a second note, you should also specify a character encoding for your
HTML documents.
http://validator.w3.org/docs/help.html#faq-charset
The most common character encodings for North America and Western
Europe are UTF-8 and ISO-8859-1. The easiest way is to add either of
the following lines to your existing HTML code:
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
or:
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
Good luck further with your fan website!

This is the page: http://mcqueenonline.com/homevideo.htm
Still seems to have a large number of trivial syntax problems
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...2Fhomevideo.htm
Really is a good idea to start with fixing the character encoding as
suggested by Kim.
A brief note about posting URLs ... the protocol is important. Please use
it, otherwise folk have to guess what you mean. Even worse some usenet
apps will try to guess on behalf of their operators.

Sorry for being unclear William, I was referring to the main/front page
http://www.mcqueenonline.com/ in this instance. I thought I would clean it
up first.
I only did a little bit of fiddling on
http://mcqueenonline.com/homevideo.htm and seem to have solved the problem I
originally referred to.
Lots of work to go!

he he no problem guys, give me a buzz in 3 months when I'm finished on my
own ;-)
I've now got the http://www.mcqueenonline.com/homevideo.htm page completely
debugged as well. That only leaves 40 other movie review pages, and another
10 different theme links to go!!!!

Cracking news! looking good :)
Have you considered giving the links some treatment to make it blindingly
obvious that they are links? The usual indicator is underline but perhaps
a change of [back]ground colour on hover would do the trick.

Does your server support a scripting language - might make your life a
little easier (shared code/markup).

As William suggested, your next task will be to look at using scripting
and a database for your content.
That way you will only need *one* movie review page that is populated by
data from the database.
When you add new reviews, you simply put them into the database. Also
makes it very easy to edit a review.
