I finally decided today to add gb7648 to my newsreader's kill-file (100
days locked up for the google lover)

Wow, what a helluva difference that made to the newsgroup.

Viper is edging closer to the trap door as well.

I have used xnews for years and I have to say that it has one of the best
kill-files in the business. Once you click to kill-file, they stay
killfiled (unless they get a new isp)

Know what you mean - seems there's little chance that s/he will ever be a
useful contributor to this group. Don't think I've seen even one on-topic
post from the fool.

yes, altho the person is seemingly harmless (and may have other issues), I
just couldn't find any reason to have to hoke through his/her posts any
longer.

This is my first kill-file use in years.

Step forward viper, while I'm in good form!

Pros and Cons. I avoid recommending Xnews to newbies because instead of
using it to access multiple newsservers at once, they use it to create
multiple folders to organize their newsgroups and have them all access
the same newsserver at the same time. That tends to give them the dreaded
"too many connections" error. They scream at the ISP for being cheap, and
respond "but I only connected one time"

As for killfiles, they are great for the old style of trolls but they are
deadly for any newsgroup that gets targetted by the a-l-t-/./t-r-o-l-l-s
newsgroup (I dont want to get their attention). They dont care about
responses. Only in reaching 75% or higher of the posts. They crosspost to
a dozen other targetted-for-death groups. When new people cant find real
posts and real responses, they move on. The group dies while the regulars
wonder why since their killfiles keep them from seeing the problem.

Like I said, pros and cons.

that is VERY true.

I do appreciate that the newbie looking in will most likely think 'what the
hell?' when he/she sees the wasteland...and they will not hang around.

I don't know the answer tho.....beyond ensuring that good folks dominate
the majority of the volume of posts in the newsgroup.

The style is familiar to me from postings in the various UFO and alien
abduction newsgroups (don't ask - it was research). gb7648 shows some of
the classic symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia (which include an inflated
sense of self-importance based on the conviction that one has important
information that must be communicated to the world to save it from an evil
it can't see for itself).

The UFO newsgroups are full of ranters, but also many people who go there
simply to stir up the crazies and enjoy the spectacle - which is why I
often refer to it as the New Bedlam.

Ah well, gb7648 can keep viper company in my kill file - they seem to be of
a similar intellectual level and make about as much sense as each other.

Okay, call me stupid but *where* is the xnews homepage? I tried looking
for it in Google, but the only pages I could find had horrible out of

I'm still using Xnews, never used anything else since I got it.

It is out of date now. The guy who made it, stopped developing it, but
the latest version works perfectly well.

I don't have the URL to hand, but a quick look in the archive for posts
by myself, or Els (who got it the same time as me) should get you a
link.

Yeah, thanks. I found it eventually! Anyway, I downloaded and configured
it, but within minutes I had decided that I didn't like it :( Back to
Thunderbird for me, methinks.

as charles says, the bloke who wrote xnews stopped developing it 2 or 3
years ago.

I checked my version there now and it is version 5.04.25

You can download it from

oh yeah of little faith! ;)

I've used them all, and xnews is by far my personal fave.

Superb for killfiling (best I have found); superb for text based
newsgroups, superb for binary based newsgroups.....and loads of other great
pros.

All personal taste tho.

I'm sure there are some who would love to, but Luu has stated
unequivocally that he won't release the source.

My memory has it that he said something like since he wrote Xnews for
himself (thanks for sharing it, Luu!) from the beginning, the code isn't
very pretty and he's kind of embarrassed to open it.
