Author [OBIT] Bill Logan: ? - October, 2004

Hello AWW,

I hope this post isn't taken the wrong way... Some of you may have
discovered this news already, but the members I contacted did not so:

After he was mentioned a few times in AWW recently, I took it upon myself
to locate Bill Logan. His last post to AWW can be found here:

<http://groups-beta.google.com/group...ae429766c?hl=en>

Unforunately, I uncovered sad news. Sometime in October 2004, after the
16th (post date of the above message), Bill Logan passed away suddenly in
his sleep of a heart attack. Because his business was a sole
proprietorship, and he was the only one who knew the passwords to his
machines, his hosting company was dissolved, at much expense, by his widow
and 6 year-old son.

I have contact names and a PO-box mailing address, which I can send out
via email, should anyone wish to offer their condolences. If you do
decide to say a word, please keep in mind that this happened eight months
ago already, and we are only just hearing about it now. You may email me
at grey at greywyvern dot com.

I must say, he had lots of opinions, and wasn't afraid to speak his mind;
many of his positions on various topics raised ire in here, with myself
included. Yet despite everything, no one can deny that he was one of us,
and he will be missed.

RIP - Bill Logan

That just spoilt my day. Bill was always fun to go a round or two with.
Thanks for tracking this down for us.

Sad news indeed. He will be (already is) sorely missed.

Good detective work though Grey. Thanks for letting us know.

No, he really wasn't, at least not for me. The best I can say for him is
that he's the one that led me to start posting here.

However, his passing is still a crying shame. Hopefully it was relatively
painless (as painless as a heart attack can be - the original post *does*
say he died in his sleep, so one would hope it wasn't too traumatic).

Yeah.

At WHT, there's a poster with the username "loganNZ." I kept
wondering if he was Bill Logan, so I PMed him a few months ago to ask
him. He wasn't, of course, but his username still reminds me of Bill.

It isn't easy to do, that's for sure. I haven't done nearly enough,
but one thing I've always done is make sure that at least one other
person has the usernames and passwords for every website that I'm
responsible for. (Except for my personal site, but maybe I should do
something about that.)

It's sad that it took us 9 months to learn that something had
happened to Bill. Thanks, Grey, for finding out for us. BTW, how did
you uncover this information?

In the groups where you're a regular, does at least one other person
know how to find out about you if you suddenly drop out of the
picture? For me, a couple of people here do, and more people do in
another group. I really enjoy cybergroups, but it's always felt
strange to me that something like this could happen and people might
not find out for a long time, if ever.

Sad news. I remember a very heated discussion between Bill and me, and I
think we both enjoyed it. I think that mentioning subdomains is still
something that brings memories back to people here.

Anyway, I won't forget Bill.

I'll spill some beer for him next tine I have one. Yes, he'll be missed.
He might have been (on my opinion) wrong about some things, but he was
somebody clearly trying to do the right things in the right way, and
that's all anyone can really ask of any of us.

In another group I read and post now and then we also had a regular
disappear. I think it was like a month or two later that his wife emailed
some of the people from the group and they let the rest of us know.

Not sure about how I got along with Bill, I have a hard time remembering
stuff from a week ago anymore.

RIP Bill.

Maybe some got less worried because Duende was also gone for some time, and

In the past I have been contacted a few times when I was suddenly out of
the picture for a week or so, also because people knew at that time that I
was not doing ok. But I have also been away for months, and nobody informed
back then. So it depends on age, and what people know I guess.

It happens in real life too. But because there are more ways that news
travels, especialy if it's in your own town, you hear sooner.

Hell, even I'm not solely dependent on me for my financial well being.

Seriously. My father didn't make a will, and that put my mother through a
LOT of unnecessary stress, and that's with all relatives agreed that we
stay out of it and she gets everything.

The main bit was looking through some old Google-cached pages until I
found a former customer of bildanet.com. That customer was then able to
point me to someone who had the information.

Perhaps. This makes me wonder whether it's worth trying to find brucie?

I have no idea. From a visit to his site ages ago I remember he has (had)
problems similar to ones I had (if you can compare such things), and
sometimes I have the idea that it would be good to take a break for some
time in my case.

Ah, hadn't looked there. I assumed that since the site had been taken

IIRC that's usually just the last time that whois database was updated,

Can be a good idea for anyone, really. It just that while it's not
unusual for brucie to disappear, sometimes for months at a time, he's
never been gone for anywhere near this long before.

I'm thinking that I will probably just send him something via snail
mail. That way he can choose to respond or not, in his own time. Ringing
is probably too invasive (and more expensive for me).

Sad news. Bit of a shock too.

You never know why some people stop posting, but something like this is
always in the back of your mind.

It would be sweet to make an expression of condolance to his family.
They might not know we even exist.

Thanks for doing this Grey.

RIP Bill Logan. I hope he took his rugby ball to heaven with him!

That got me thinking. If I passed away suddenly, no-one I know would make
a post in here. My friends and family know that I have webmaster chums
online, but they don't do (and have never done) usenet.

I am a sole trader too. I have thought about this before. I have a file
with important stuff in it, passwords etc, so I think someone would be able
to continue with it.

It's not that people don't like you, Viper, it's just that you say some
pretty dumb and/or controversial things sometimes, and they really get
up peoples' backs. I'm sure you're not a bad person really.

I agree. Grey, if you want to send a card or something to his family
from this group, I think that would mean a lot to them even months
later. We can't really pass around the card to collect signatures,
but our thoughts are with his family.

I was thinking about doing this. I could add names for those who'd like
to be on it. I think it would be cool if we could include Name + City
+ Country for each, just to show how far-reaching Bill's influence was and
that he has friends (aquaintences at least) the world over.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't like obnoxious jerks who have no
clue what they're talking about and talk just because they like the sounds
of their own voices. Viper would fit neatly into that category. I won't have
a party when he dies, but he's still an XXX.

That's hard to tell based on Usenet postings alone. Even if you can throw

they look, how they are?

It's very hard to judge people from their writing alone because you
cannot see facial queues and such. Nearly everyoen comes off a bit more
hardcore than they are. But I still think Viper is an XXXXXXX, but that
isn't from how he speaks or what he says, but instead his "I'll attack
everything you own if you disagree with me and I'll stab friends in the
back in a heartbeat if they disagree with me" attitude.

That's the same thing that happens to radio dj's, I'm usually surprised
when I see them because rarely do they match my image of them. I know
it happens on the Net too because I've met some people I only knew
previously from usenet at shows and conventions, I'm usually surprised,
and they almost always are (I'm 6'7", 275 lbs and fairly solid, shaved
head, goatee, a biker equally at home at a HA bash as I am in a

Yep and have done that. Guy and 5 of his friends attacked me in my house
because his son and my brother got into a fight. I was the first one they
seen when they entered. They walked right on in. At the time I didnt own my
"best friend". Well the cops did nothing to him or his friends. Within a
year him and 2 of the others were dead. All 3 were 20 to 40 years old so
they died young. Had me a few beers each time one died and I read it in the
paper.

Maybe a good idea to put the complete list somewhere so people can see that
they are on the list, as a kind of confirmation and a last check?

I would, but half the list is at work, and half of the list is here at
home. When I buy the card, I will merge the lists and post what I have
here. Everyone who has posted their details in this thread, I have down.

If you've never experienced top fuelers up close, you wouldn't believe
the experience. Seriously. :)

I know that F1 purists (or other road/oval-only enthusiasts) don't get
the idea of a short, straight-line (if all goes well) racing. But c'mon
-- a standing quarter-mile[1] in <checking current records> 4.441
seconds and a terminal speed of 336.15 mph?[1] In its own way, it's
pretty incredible.

"Charles Sweeney" responded:
: That got me thinking. If I passed away suddenly, no-one I know
would make
: a post in here. My friends and family know that I have webmaster
chums
: online, but they don't do (and have never done) usenet.

A few years ago, I made a point of exchanging enough information
(e.g. work phone numbers) with a couple of online friends so that we
could find out about the other person if we weren't able to reach
that person directly. I should probably update it because I don't
know if they still have this info. Those people are regulars in
another newsgroup. In this group, a couple of occasional posters who
I knew before I started coming here could track down information
about me if I disappeared.

My suggestion for everyone here is to make sure at least one or two
people can reach you besides by email, and if you live alone, that
they have a phone number for someone you're in regular contact with.
I remember one man in another group saying that he'd asked his wife
to let the group know if anything happened to him.

Sure, we're just posting on Usenet, but look at the reaction to the
news of Bill's passing. It affects all of us. The next time a regular
stops posting, we probably won't assume that the person is taking a
break. If we've given at least one person enough contact information
to find out what's happened with us, I think a lot of people here
will appreciate being able to find out.

It's very sad that someone has died. The situation is even sadder
because we didn't know for months.

: I am a sole trader too. I have thought about this before. I have
a file
: with important stuff in it, passwords etc, so I think someone would
be able
: to continue with it.

Good idea. I make a point of giving key passwords to a web developer
friend of mine or to at least one other person involved in the
project. I also have a secondary contact listed for all of my hosting
accounts. The important point is that we've both made sure that we
aren't the only ones holding the keys.
