Upload the video file with a .RM extension, or whatever the relevant
extension is for RealVideo, and also upload a Meta file with a .RAM
extension....
The meta file is simply a text file containing the URL of the actual
video file....
The link you place on your website to allow your visitors to stream the
video simply points to the meta file....

This solution works fine using your standard web server....No need for
dedicated streaming hardware unless you're expecting massive quantities
of downloads per hour....

Thank you. What software do you use to encode into .rm? Do you use the
RealProducer package?

Just observing from the side, but is it only Real that supports such
streaming? I notice that yourself and Sam both suggest it.

Quicktime and WinMedia too.
But you need the streaming software.
Real encodes to the smallest file, while holding quality, and you can, due
to the player buffering, simulate streaming protocol without using the
RealServer.
;)
And, you can install the Player with no bombarding ads now.

Is it now completely tame or does it still try to take over and phone home?

Whatever you do - do something.

It's tame, but you've got to make sure you do the setup right.
Simply uncheck every damn thing they offer to throw at you, including News
Flashes and update alerts.
That's it.

I've done this with Real Media, and Windows Media in the past...Both
need a Meta file to make them stream....The principle is much the same
for both formats.....
I've noticed that stuff like quicktime doesn't seem to work in this same
way....I've never played around much with quicktime, but from what I've
seen, they're generally embedded into the page somehow
The software I used was a package called "The Cleaner"....Fantastic
piece of software, as it converts just about any format into any other
with little or no quality loss....Quite expensive though....

I didn't realise Quicktime would stream using the method I
mentioned....You live and learn....
> But you need the streaming software.
I've successfully streamed WinMedia without the need for streaming
software, just a Meta file....I suppose it probably depends on the size
of the file....

I like Real format for stuff like this....Good quality and teh player is
readilly available...
