Author Novice needs basic webpage advice
Happy

I am running an accounting service business. I have a 1-page webpage (I used
template given by the hosting company and juz change the text becos that's
all I know)

I want to put a counter so that I know the how many people visited it. How
to do it?(free if possible)

I heard that it's useless to have a website if nobody visits it. So how do
I direct people to my website?

Thanks

Put your URL on everything! Stick it on letters that you send from your
business, put it on your business cards, write it into the dirt on white
transit vans, everything :)

SOmeone else already gave a good answer. But you should have access to the
"web logs" which is can be much more informative than a counter. Check into
it with whoever hosts your page

The first thing you should do is create a "signature" that goes onto your
posts with your site listed in it. Use Google and groups.google to search
for conversations where it would be appropriate for you to jump in. Not
spamming your business but making comments and letting them see your sig

Look at it from a different point of view. From where I sit (can't speak
for others) you /are/ someone else.

Im sorry. Its laziness on my part. The right, proper, knowledgeable Guru
Dylan Parry has granted the knowledge (to which I humbly add my meager
comments)... Hmmm that was supposed to be a giggle but it comes off too
sarcastic. Not at all what I meant it as. *sigh* When we are all jacked-in
then we wont have these problems because we will be able to attach the
proper emotion to what we type. :)

That's ok - text is King, Queen and the gaddamn Jack of spades all rolled
into one when it comes to web site building.

In addition to the splendid answers from the someone-elses ...

ok - sounds to me like you're getting close to outgrowing that service.
So, time to stop and think what you want from the page. A 'call to
action' for your visitor. What do you want them to do as a result of
visiting your page?

For a site such as you have described, it is common for the call to action
to be ...
o call us - publish a specific telephone number to handle web generated
enquiries.
o mail us - publish a specific email address to handle mail from that
page.

Incidently, I have one customer with a dozen or so sites, each with maybe
30 pages. Each page has a contact thingie with a separate mail address.
Must be a nightmare to administer, but it's his way of keeping in touch
with how well each page is performing.

Thanks Gandalf,

I envisage my potential clients will go to Google/Yahoo and search for
"accounting" or "bookkeeping" etc.
I want the webpage to be in 1st or 2nd page of search results. What can I
do??

Well the search engines used to keep things simple in their efforts to
put the best answer near the top. But people abused it each time to put
their stuff near the top whether it deserved to or not. So the formula
for deciding the top site got more and more complicated. Im afraid that
Im against those tactics so Im not going to be very clear about how you
can do that.

Use metatags hidden in the code to make sure that words people might
include in their search can lead to you. The number of sites which link
to that site also figures in on "popularity". Pay for ad placement in
Google and Yahoo.

You might also want to explain what benefits there are in doing
accounting business with someone in Singapore since to me it sounds like
something to be avoided

Unless the searcher/visitor is actually in Singapore when I imagine it
would make perfect sense.

I didn't see a web address for your site (unless I missed it
somewhere). You may want to put the webpage address here so that
others can see it.

There are quite a few free counters that one can put on their website
and you can just do a simple search to find some of them. Adding the
code for a free counter is a simple "cut and paste" kind of thing but
you have to be careful - depending upon your html knowledge - because
one mis-typed code and your whole website can be unreadable.

How do you direct people to your website? You tell them about it.
There are lots of sites where you can post and announce your website.
You should also have some business cards and literature with your
webpage (and regular) contact information. How many people have you
met and then thought afterwards - dagnabbit! I wish I would have had a
business card that I could have given to them?

Number 2 - who is your target market? Who is most likely to need your
services? When you answer that question - that answer will be the
target market that you should be going after.
