"Computer equipment could help MRSA spread"

http://www.e-health-insider.com/news/item.cfm?ID=1141

"Keyboards and computer equipment installed in hospitals may aid the
spread of 'superbug' bacteria such as MRSA, a study in a Chicago hospital
has revealed.

Just touching a keyboard is enough to pick up the bacteria and potentially
pass it on to a patient, according to the results of the study.
Furthermore, cleaning the equipment with soap and water, according to the
manufacturer's instructions, may not remove the infection."

" The only way the bacterial infections were removed were through sluicing
the keyboard with antiseptic; however, this may in the long-term end up
damaging the computer equipment."

No kidding.

Remember children, hospitals are for sick people. Don't go unless you
want to be sick.

Computers are not the only way infection can spread. There was a bit
of controversy over one Atlantic Canadian hospital's efforts to reduce
the spread of disease in the hospital. Some later news stories about it:

We have a medical-problems child who is very susceptable to things like
colds. Not deadly or anything. Just gets them alot and it causes problems.

We were always in the habit of following the old instructions to clear a
house of infections. One was to spray disinfectant on every touch-surface.
We got good at spraying doorknobs, flush handles, faucet handles, knobs to
drawers and cupboards, light switches, etc. We saw a note in a forum saying
to be sure and upgrade to things like cell phones.

Our effectiveness went up drastically when we upgraded the instructions
logically to include remote control for the tv, keyboards, mouses, buttons
on the computers and monitors. Apparently we were getting rid of colds and
flu but "storing" the viruses there while we did it.

Damn right. I've spent loads of time in hospital over the years, and for
pretty much all of it I was ill.

I have thought for a while that we need to have separate hospitals for the
sick and for the injured. If you have a gaping wound on your thigh, you
don't really need to be put in a ward with people who have severely
infectious diseases.

I can't imagine an occasion when that would be true.

The emergency room.

Also, I have a friend whose daughter was put right after knee surgery
in the room of someone who'd been battling a severe drug-resistant
post-op infection for several days. The mom, who's a doc, screamed
bloody murder until they got her daughter out of there (excuse was
lack of free beds, mother said put her in the hall or solarium or
*anyplace* else).
