Author Deleting a Folder from server.
plato

How do I delete a folder from a server without having to delete programs/sub
folders first? The FTP_LE seems to have the option to delete folder but then
tells me the directory isn't empty...I have SSH access but also the delete
or erase commands won't do the job....

There must be a way....

Consider changing your FTP client. If it cannot delete recursively, it will
probably not copy recursively either. There is an FTP client that's build
into Firefox and for a change it's free (and nag-free) even under Windows.
It is called FireFTP and there's a beta version.

I had to install it as an extension, here, Roy. Are you sure it's
built into the Windows FF?

Just the word Firefox runs a shiver though my spine having emails from
people telling me they can't see the site properly http://corrobex.com but
as I get over 90% of visitors through either explorer or netscape it's easy
to see what my priorities are... so if you have a solution for all let me
know and I'll make the changes to the site.

Three things:

1. Firefox has had 50 million downloads, and is growing in popularity.

2. If your site doesn't work in Firefox, then those visitors won't stay
long, which would give you reduced hits from Firefox users, perhaps
giving you the impression that there are less Firefox users than there
really are.

3. Why not make your site work in all browsers?

Seems to me that your priorities are twofold:
1. Lazy design & development
2. Reducing your customer headcount by 10%.

Just had a look at your code after it's been through the W3C's
validator. How did you produce that?

Crikey - having looked at the source for that page I don't really know
where to start - except from scratch maybe.

The page is so full of extraneous markup - probably placed there by
DoomWeaver.

yep - start again using your favourite text editor and work slowly,
checking your markup as you build up each part of the document.

I just gave that a try, but it couldn't handle downloading a directory
with 1000+ files in it, so for me it's back to Filezilla at home and
ws_ftp at work.

Seems to be multiple <head> <body> elements sprinkled through the
documant. The body element on line 47
<body bgcolor="#000000" text="#000000" topmargin="0" leftmargin="1"
marginwidth="786"> seems to cause the offest for me (Firefox)

Perhaps the marginwidth="786" might have something to do with it?

There's another on line 489 that is similar.

No not lazy design and development I'm just not sure how to make the code
compatable for all browsers... I'd be happy to make it compatible for all
but didn't think that was possible.

This may be because there is a header/script/footer which makes up the page

You've been told already, in abstract terms. If you really do have the
heart for it then you will get help here. You must first free your mind
from almost (no, not almost, absolutely) everything you ever learned about
building a web page.

Now open a text editor - notepad will do.

Pick a page from your site - home/index page will probably do - best to
start with a fairly simple page if possible. Open that page in a browser
it 'works' in. Copy/paste all the text into your editor. The only markup
you should be applying is <p>..</p> and <h[1-6]>...</h[1-6]> where
appropriate.

Next grab all the image elements (ignore any spacer gifs and background
images etc) from the source and place them in the document. Apply ALT
attribute text as appropriate.

Next get any links you need for navigation and insert them.

choose a doctype and paste the reference at the top of your document. if
you're determined to do this right then you probably want HTML 4.01 Strict

add this markup <html><head><title>My New Page</title></head><body>
immediately after the doctype declaration.

add this markup </body></html> at the end of your document

if applicable, you can also add in any lists - often <ul><li>....

there should be no other markup _*AT ALL*_ in the document just yet.

post it on a server and come back for more help. yes it will look crap
(at this stage), but as I indicated at the top, it takes a strong will to
do it right.

disclaimer: I probably forgot something important, but it's late here.

For clues, search the archive and take a look at the personal home sites
of Grey, Dylan, Els (picked at random) and for a slightly unorthodox (but
equally effective) treatment check out Matt Probert and Charles Sweeney.

Perhaps an offer of assistance would be warmly received then. Maybe an
explanation of what happens when a browser receives data that's out of
spec?

I have it installed on both a Linux machine (SuSE 8.2, FF 1.0.4) where it
has never crashed (remember it's a beta!) and on Windows 98 (FF 1.0.3)
where it can crash if you bang hard on it. It is rarely critical when an
FTP client crashes, unlike for example, text editors and a multi-tab
browsers. You can always pick things up where you were previously.

FireFTP is not marvellous on its own, but it's free, inter-operable and I
can open it in a new tab with just 2 keystrokes.

As I said, I use it. My question was about the claim that it's "build
[sic] into Firefox". If it's an extension, I don't see how it's built
in.

Use only simple HTML. No Javascript, no frames, no positioning CSS
commands (older browsers ignore them and the whole thing can fall
apart), no marquees, no iframes, no embeded sounds or videos.

Do you have a copy of the free text web browser, Lynx ? It is
available for Windows and Linux and possibly other platforms. If a
page works in Lynx, you can be confident it works in almost any
browser, and that search engines can spider it.

I see what you mean now. I also noticed the typo after posting, but didn't
bother with supersede (having discussed its cr**piness a few days ago).

My phrasing in this NG was poor, admittedly. Let us hope, however, that the
Mozilla/Firefox team will begin to integrate more extensions in the future.
Mouse Gestures and FTP, for example, seem to me like simple yet valuable
features to all.

I just didn't want OP (or whoever) to bat his brains out trying to find
FireFTP in his nonextended installation of Firefox. :)

I'm not too sure I'd support that, although it's certainly a matter of
degree. At first I had the same reaction, then I got to thinking that a
stable minimal (not that I consider FF feature-poor) base browser that's
very, very, very highly customizable like FF is with hundreds of
extensions is probably better. Sure, you have to install them, but
that's a no-brainer, and most are small enough that they're not
a drag even here with my small pipe. I've ended up being pretty well
sold on the extension model. That said, gestures and FTP would be a
couple of the first ones I'd incorporate if FF were my project and I
was looking to add native features.

Possibly?

Whether or not a platform can run Lynx can almost be seen as a dividing
line between "real platforms" and "toy platforms". :-)

There is Lynx for pretty much all Unices, Mac OS (X and Classic), DOS,
BeOS, ...

Many FTP clients do not have a "delete recursively" option, or have it
well hidden for a very good reason: if it's not there then it's very
difficult to accidentally delete lots of files.
