I was having a chat earlier today in an IRC channel totally unrelated to
AWW; treasonous I know, yet I've been a regular there for over a year
now. Suddenly, out of nowhere, someone I know who has never even heard of
this group posts a link to an image at probertencyclopaedia.com.

Let me tell you, I got a hefty helping of the "worlds-are-colliding"
feeling!

The image was <http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/j/Sela%20Ward.jpg> and
reportedly, the chatter who posted it found it via a google image search.

Oh, and BTW Matt, he says he owes you a beer ;) Shall I tell him you'll
be taking him up on the offer?

Hoot! It tickles me when that happens. Searching Google and coming
across someone's site from here! I think I might have got Matt's
before, I also got Karl Core's when searching for PHP scripts to see how
one of mine was doing!!

Looks like you're famous Matt! Forgetting, you are already in an
O'Reilly book!

Once upon a time, far far away, the king summoned GreyWyvern
<spam@greywyvern.com> who replied:

I am honoured that he should find a use for the encyclopaedia, and I
am always happy to meet with readers and have a drink with them,
though my schedule is somewhat busy.

What's even stranger is searching Google and finding yourself on a
page that you'd written. It happened to me once. I didn't notice the
URL when I clicked on the page title, and I ended up on a page I'd
written for a client months previously. It had the info I was looking
for too. :-)

What's even stranger is getting a link to one of your own pages as the
first item found in your *first* attempt to use a search engine.

One of my pages mentions that I used to be a GCA technician so I though
it might be appropriate to have a page about GCA RADAR. However, after
putting in a couple of short comments I realised that most of what I
knew about GCA RADAR was classified. For that reason, the page remained
skimpy. Then I got queries from two different UFO enthusiasts about
RADAR, one in Russia and one in the Netherlands and decided to look for
some publicly-available information to add to the page.

I went to Lycos (this was before Google) and typed "GCA RADAR" into the
query form, hit the Submit button, and the first page listed in the
results was my own skimpy GCA page.

I never did get around to adding anything to it.
