|

| Dear all,
I'd like to realize a VR project.
I explain: I'd like to make a virtual classroom where the students can
access with their avatars.
For client-side I can use Cortona or blaxxun...but wich software can I
use to create this virtual environment?
Do you know if an open-source environment multi-user server-side
software exist?
What do you think about VRspace?
Thanks so mutch for your help.

Am currently involved developing Deep Matrix MU server for that
exact thing for a friend at the University of Baltimore.

Deep Matrix is just that - an Open Source MU server that is both
very Cortona and blaxxun friendly. In fact it is also Cosmoplayer
friendly and will work to a more limited extent with old WorldView.
I currently have two online test versions:
http://www.sevenemeraldtablets.net/...t/client_applet
A version with much more features:
http://www.sevenemeraldtablets.net/Community/mactest5/
Deep Matrix use to be a product of the now defunct Geometrek
site, but was made Open Source by them.
Our site to further develop it is http://www.deepmatrix.org
Things are in a state of transition right now though with it.

VRSpace is neat too. Has some problems with Cortona though.
Please keep in mind that both Deep Matrix and VRspace are EAI
Java based. What this means for the commercial VRML plugins is
that the Java applet will only work with the M$ JVM in Internet
Explorer and NOT the Sun JVM.
Deep Matrix will also work with the later Netscape 4* series.
VRSpace could in theory, but currently won't.
Because of the technical limitations of getting Java and classes
set up right, neither is friendly to the non-savvy user and
commercially not viable.
However I see both having a future in a closed technical enviroment
where everything is set up for the user before hand - like a virtual
class room.

oops.........
This link takes you to an html portal requiring a password.
Just type anything ( but you do have to something, don't try to leave
it blank :)
for a password.
Ditto for a user name.
Sorry about that.

I'm developping too a multi-user server and a client applet, my system
allow to enter in a virtual place and view and talk to other users.
But this is still under development ...
And it works only with Windows + IE + BlaxxunContact + Java (Sun or
MS).
Good luck,

| hi Olivier,
Been awhile. :)
Well simply put your classpath isn't set up right, or possibly XP is
up to it's anal security again and you have to loosen some restriction.
It has nothing to do with the applet, but I think you know that.

Well, like alot of other things, it has to be maintained.
"Maintained" -meaning knowing what it requires of your
computer's enviroment in order to work.
If you change that, by saying installing a different VRML browser
or uninstalling the VRML browser you have to expect problems.
It goes with the territory.
Having a MU system that has the capability to be cross platform out
weighs
its need for a little tech knowledge.
