| hi,
In regards to Cortona, the vrml/external folder is located
in the archive "corteai.zip" , which is found ( on my system anyway :)
at: C:\Program Files\Common Files\ParallelGraphics\Cortona
Normally when dealing with EAI, All you really have to worry about is
the MS JVM having the correct classpath pointing to that archive.
ie : "C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\PARALL~1\\CORTONA\\corteai.zip;"
and not with "vrml/external"
The Cortona installation puts in the correct classpath
on installation and you don't have to worry about anything if
1. You have the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MS JVM) installed.
(Cortona's EAI will not run on the Sun java plugin!, if you have
both installed, it's easy enough to switch between the two.)
2. Cortona is your only VRML browser.
If your machine has Windows XP and is only 2 years old, then there
is a good chance you do not have the MS JVM installed!
You can find a MS JVM download site here:

and you will want the M$ security upgrade found here:

| K, 'tis sad when you have to critize your own post :)
Ok the first said I thing is true in terms of corteai.zip
containing the classes you need. However everything I said
after that only pertains to getting the classes to run AFTER
you have them compiled. Since you are still trying to compile them,
then I "jumped the gun" a bit.
To compile them, set the target option of the compiler to 1.1
You should be able to use the Sun compiler for compiling, but
NOT the Sun JVM for running them.
In terms of the VRML browser's EAI classes you will want to use
Cortona's ( or Contact's ) instead of Cosmoplayers's,
because Cosmoplayer's doesn't contain the beginUpdate
and endUpdate methods that were added on later to the EAI 1 spec.
While I mentioned corteai.zip as a source for these files,
a better source is the plywood.jar file that Cortona uses
for EAI in Netscape. The reason is that using corteai.zip
will probably make the compiler demand classes from the MS JVM,
such as "IUknown" and "_GID" classes and you will have to add a
second classpath to make it shut up. Setting the compiler
classpath to include Plywood.jar will let you skip that nuisance.
Sorry for any confusion!
