| I really appreciate Bitmanagement Software's Contact 6.X,
but the damned box is very annoying indeed and? I think that
$300 US is a bit much for a one computer license (not a one
server license mind you!). I know many people have tried it,
and uninstalled it after hating that thing as it is in the way for
some things. I can understand needing to make money, but I cannot
understand trying to get it all from client computers, not servers.
If Bitmanagement would consider a more realistic price for
one computer (not server) for local use on the computer I
work with I would be more than happy to purchase the code
to remove the damned box I can tell ya!
What do others here think of this?

| Hi Guys
I truly disliked the box when it was down in the lower right corner,
and have learned to hate it now that it roams freely. Somebody needs
to drag the guys at Bitmanagement.DE aside and explain that The Box
will kill any good marketing they come up with. Flux is poised to
meet or exceed on the VRML and X3D areas, and if Parallelgraphics ever
gets its act together it really could kill. There are choices and
people go with the prettiest and easiest.
And yes, you are correct, $300 USD (plus taxes) is an obnoxious amount
for a plugin.

| Um box? You mean the logo box that stays in the lower
right hand corner of my 6.1? I don't mind it at all.
It beats the dorky console of the 4* series.
I haven't tried 6.2 yet, but my understanding is the
box wanders over the screen with that version.
Am surprised it doesn't flash a sign "Pay up you
freeloader"
Here is a thought for an alternate fork in the time
road- What if blaxxun had charged a modest amount, say
$25 after a 30 day hook-trial period for Contact
back in the 4.0 days and charge $10 for each upgrade!
Jeez I'll bet they would be solvent, their servers would't
be as expensive and the box wouldn't be there to
annoy you.

| If you reread my post carefully, you will note that I would gladly pay a
"reasonable" fee for box removal. $300 US is more than I paid for
VizX3D to create content. More than what Parallel Graphics charges
for VRMLPad, more than a hell of a lot of software.
In light of your last paragraph, here's a scenario for you.
Bitmanagement continues outrageous pricing, no one buys the licenses,
Bitmanagement goes bellyup like Blaxxun. Did tbey learn anything from
either experience? Nope cause the $ on their eyeglasses blinded them.

Shouldn't you talk about "legal or illegal" instead of "box or box removal" ?

This type of argumentation is useless, especially if you include open source
software as well.
Should Micro$oft begin to give away Micro$oft Word only cause there is now
a free competitor like OpenOffice ?
There is also free opensource software for VRML creation and VRML viewing.
If you think, money is a problem, switch to this tools. If you think, this
tools are not complete enough, begin to help the development (e.g. write
extensions, bugmessages or translate menus or documentation).

Bitmanagement do not offer only the usual VRML plugin.
It also sells the Stereo/"Cave"-versions of their browser and MPEG software.
I do not know, what is the Bitmanagement cash cow, but i heard the
multiwall "Cave" version is rather expensive (as the target hardware is very
expensive), so Bitmanagment can possibly survive from a relative small
amount of clients...

| Hi,
thanks for your discussion on the list, which we see with great
interest.
In the wake of the IT hype some years ago many people understand
nowadays that the development of stable and supported technology
cannot be provided for free. With regards to pricing for 3D viewers,
much higher fees are charged for similar software in markets such as
CAD, Architecture and Games.
However as we want to support the VRML/X3D community we offer a single
PC license for BS Contact VRML/X3D for personal use for USD $ 49.99
based on our standard contract. This offer is limited until September
30th 2004.
Hope this helps!
