collision avoidance of an urban structure

| This was probably addressed before but I may have missed it since I have
only been using VRML for 1/3 of a year, and do not follow this newsgroup
continuously. So pointers to URLs or existing
open source if it exists would be great.
I eventually want an agent (or avatar) navigating a virtual environment
with urban structures defined by VRML, e.g. web.nps.navy.mil/~brutzman/
Savage/Buildings/ErdcTwoStoryBuilding/ErdcTwoStoryBuilding.wrl. But it
is not realistic using default collision, say hitting a wall and sliding
along it. In real life one would anticipate the collision and avoid the problem.
I have visited the excellent work of Peter Gerstman (OSU) on this topic at
accad.osu.edu/~pgerstma/protolib/AvoidObstacles/AvoidObstacles.wrl.
To begin I would like to replace one of the static spheres with the above
building by simply dropping it in. It is probably not this simple. I am
unsure of how to define this new obstacle using his "Obstacle" PROTO; scaling
his "size" field would probably be an issue. And I am sure I would encounter more
problems as I continued.
If anyone is familiar with his work and/or how it can be done please let
me know. Or if it has been addressed before and VRML/X3D code is available,
URLs are appreciated.
Thank you.

Only, if your wall is visible. You get a very much more usefull collision,
if you install a second, invisible (or nearly invisible) wall before the
real wall.
