Hi,
I'm looking for any non-standard effects that can be done in VRML97 like
shadows, smoke, fire, water, curtains - can you recommend any good examples?

Things like fire and smoke can be done with via particles in standard VRML97
via scripting

http://www.csv.ica.uni-stuttgart.de...s/waterfall.wrl
http://www.csv.ica.uni-stuttgart.de...mples/flame.wrl

AFAIK contact has a builtin particle node as extension. It also has a realtime
shadow extension.

mdk,
Hey, seeing that you haven't gotten a reply yet for a "good"
library, I thought I would offer the few examples we have at VRSpace:

http://www.vrspace.org:8080/vrspace/lib/

Check out the efects directory, and the model/efects directory. There are
examples scattered about the lib as well.

Aye, I forgot to mention, check out the Bottom Guns section at
http://vrspace.org/~zzarkov/. The battlefield has a river that runs
through it.

Do you talk about

http://vrspace.org/~zzarkov/bguns/l...n/vrml/lake.wrl

?

Well, water is usually done with morphing:

http://www.csv.ica.uni-stuttgart.de/vrml/waves.wrl

Off course, this would also work with a IndexedFaceSet instead of
the VRML97 Amendment 1 NurbsSurface, it is only more data...

What is missing in VRML97 is support for a environment map texture,
that would cause the fake mirror effect that is commonly used for water in
a lot of 3D games. Some VRML browsers (e.g. the VRML browser in covise)
support it as a extension. Added by X3D ? who knows....

Thanks for you replies!
From VRspace I went to
http://www.3dtowns.at/vrspace/index.html
and I saw the picture with "Tickets" kiosk on it. It has a nice shadow
behind it (only on the picture though). Is there any program that could
calculate such shadows automaticaly (given for example the kiosk object
and light source position), and save it as some IndexedFaceSet?

(I mean AFAIK shadows can be done in VRML mainly in this way - with
IndexedFaceSet - correct me please if I'm wrong).

No, not as IndexedFaceSet. This effect can be only done in realtime with a
browserextension (e.g. with cc3d) or offline as ImageTexture. Some
Radiosityrenderers like FormZ can account ImageTextures with shadows
dogether with the VRML97 export. FormZ only works good this way,
if the object with the shadow is not rounded.

IndexedFaceSet based fake shadows only looking good, if the light would be
a parallel light exact on top of the object

http://www.csv.ica.uni-stuttgart.de...ag/schatten.wrl

This can be done with any modeller, that support doubling objects and
the flipping of coordinates.

You can try to extent the trick for pointlight by using rotation, scaling
and sharing, but the results are not that good
