Didn't you miss something, before talking about software producers ? 8-)

VRML/X3D is a standard, not a software product.

BTW:
- As you know, this type of cartoon effect is not very difficult to make
with VRML.
- A automatic LOD can be implemented with the NURBS nodes in X3D.

I know that VRML or X3D is a standard but the possibilities to use it
depends on the sofware (tools, viewers, exporters).
Anyway i know there is a Shader Proposal (in the news at
http://www.web3d.org/ )for X3D too and they wrote a plugin for Ati
RenderMonkey.
Hope this demo will the VRML/X3D family.
