Hi,
I am an OpenGL programmer. I am currently trying to write an application
that opens a vrml file in an OpenGL application program (not a browser). Are
there any libraries available for such as this or if somebody could give me
a good tutorial to begin with to begin being able to do the same (or is it
an impossible task?).

thanks

OpenVRML is such a library you need. There is a example glut based application
(the "lookat" VRML browser) you can use as startpoint.
http://www.openvrml.org/

For the blaxxun (4.3) browser, there is a similar library and a similar glut based
application.
The Commiunity source address has been gone with the www.web3d.org reorganisation 8-(

CyberVRML/CyberX3D is also somewhat similar:
http://cybergarage.org/vrml/

If the license of your application matches, you can also cannibalise parts of
open source VRML applications like white_dune or FreeWRL 8-)

so long
