Chisel has been reborn. Chisel is a VRML optimizer.

You can get it at http://www.external.hrp.no/vr/tools/chisel/install.htm

More information about this latest incarnation is available at
http://www.macweb3d.org/

I do not use my Win32 system as an Administrator-class user. I switch
to the local Administrator account for software installation. There
is nothing that I (or most people) do that requires that I have the
power to destroy my system, so I don't run as Administrator; kind of
like not running as "root" on a *nix system.

I installed Chisel, and the program group ended up in the
Administrator "Documents and Settings" Start Menu space, and not the
"All Users" Start Menu space. That usually happens when a developer
only runs as an administrator and does not test the post-build
install.

Could you have your guys look into that for the next version?

By the way, the app is *sweet*! Can it be scripted from a CLUI?

Thanks.

Couldn't you please public simply the jar file of chisel and instructions, how to
use it or include at least a pointer to the sources ?

Did you check the "add for all users" option when asked where to add aliases? If not then the default location is in the program group of the user that is installing the software.

Your installation problem here is easily resolved. What's happening is that poor old Java for IRIX is trying to display a graphical user interface and you either didn't have DISPLAY set or are not running X11 (or both). I've used the installer in the past on IRIX from the command-line, as you executed it, but with DISPLAY set and X11 running, and it works fine for me.

The installer was made available in a hurry because a number of people who knew I had made one had been asking me to let everybody have access to it, so there's no information about it on the site where the download pages. It was intended to be made primarily available via the http://www.neeneenee.de/vrml/docume.../chiseldoc.html site, where user documentation, links to the source, etc. are located, however most people have advertised the link to the download rather than to the Chisel page on neeneenee. Probably my fault, since I mentioned the location of the download page in my original posting to www-vrml about this instead of directing people to go via neeneenee.

My intention is to add a little more info to the www2.hrp.no site eventually, and also some other software (including a LOD generation Tool with a visual interface to Chisel's polygon reduction routines) that we have developed (mostly student projects). Problem is that while the software works well enough to be useful for most people, I still have to find the time to sort out license files and so forth before it can be released.... Maybe by the summer! ;)

I've add a link to http://www.neeneenee.de/vrml/docume.../chiseldoc.html to the download page, so that those directed directly to the download page can locate the docs and source code more easily.

Michael.
