Author Win Blender 1.7 and 256 colors

Hi, I am trying to run blender on an old laptop, just for demonstrations,
small things, but all I get is the "ERROR: blender requires more
than 256 colors to run." message. Google showed me a piece of code
but I am not a programmer. Is there any workaround or even an older version
of blender that would do it? I remember blender running nicely with 256
colors on FreeBSD.

Thanks,

H.

When you try it under XFree86, it suspect, it is not blenders fault:
Modern versions of Mesa3D (a OpenGL clone) do not support 8 Bit/256 Color
displays.
Maybe it can downgrade to a old version of Mesa3D.

I shouldnt have mentioned FreeBSd, it still runs nicely there.
My problem is Windows 95 :-)

The sentense is mentioned in the sources, ask google,
it doesnt say anything to me.

Ever tried to run XFree on an old 486 laptop?

I once did it, even blender did run, but much to slow,
same with Cecilia, even for the most simple things to slow.

But better than nothing, ok,

Heiko

80486 DX2 50
20 MB RAM
640x480 Screen Resolution
256 Colors / 8 Bit Color depth
ancient Slackware Linux

The 80486 DX2 50 can successfully run lookat 0.8.1 (VRML browser),
white_dune (VRML editor) and AC3D (3D modeller with VRML export).

Performance is less than 1 frame per second for a modell with 200 polygons
and no textures, but it forms a rather complete VRML development
environment 8-)

Well, I now have 20 MB, but did my tests with 8.
On another machine.
And 33 instead of 50.

FreeBSD 3.5 which sits somewhere in Australia.

Good luck!

In this case: i also have problems, running OpenGL programs with
256 colours, cause the 3D Window goes technicolor 8-(
I know, this is possible, cause cosmoplayer can do it.
I tried to use glEnable(GL_DITHER), but this do not help.
Has the blender solution (you found) something to do with that ?

Dear Mufti, no, I have no solution, I had never problems on FreeBSD.
And I am shure I was on 256 colors sometimes ;-)

I thought it is just this one Windows binary, 1.7 something, and some
cool person would tell me a link to some even older version, 1.5
or whatever, that would do it.

I am not a great VRML artist, btw, did some "classical" 3d, but I
do use it mostly for movie manipulations, projections onto
moving objects etc, like http://intra.b.lab.net/~uzs106/bla/schnee.mpg .
Bubble movies.

Anyway, best,

H.

Maybe this laptop has just the wrong graphics chip, but it has 20 MB RAM ;-)
