Author Export VRML 2 from Gmax?

I've downloaded a copy of Gmax from the discreet website. While it is
a great program, it seems to save files in no useful format. I need
either to find a plugin to save directly to VRML 2, or some utility
that can transform .gmax files into VRML 2. Are such tools available?

There is no VRML-Exporter for gMax (just lasma or 3dsMax). But you can
export your files as a Quake (md3) or 3ds-file and convert these files
(using another converter) to VRML.

PS: You can create your own exporter using maxscript. a good source
for a exporter is here:

For converting from Quake3 to VRML, you can use either the classic
exporter:

Or Holger's improved version (that can also do the classic way) who
can export multitextured, keeping the light effects from the quake
map:

But more generally, i think a direct exporter for Gmax would be
helpful to the community.

There are converters from 3DS files to VRML, including 3D Studio Max itself.
