VRML and Java Support

| I've been thinking of transforming some of my Scripts in Javascript into
Java and was wondering if the major VRML browsers (Cosmo, Cortona,
Blaxxun) would be able to run the Java class that I list in the Script
node. Do all VRML browsers have Java support automatically or must it
be downloaded separately from Sun? Don't want to alienate anyone that
might not have Java on their machines.
Remove h to reach me.

| Hey,
Yeah, I too had trouble finding out this info. The faq at
http://vrmlworks.crispen.org/eai_faq/scripts.html lists some
supporting browsers:
Cosmo Software Cosmo Player
Intervista WorldView
Newfire Torch
Sony Community Place
On top of them:
Contact 5.1 does not support Java scripts, nor does
Contact 6.1. Cortona does support them.

I am sad to say that the Java supported by these browsers does not
include Sun's java plugin. i.e. in Internet Explorer they use the
Microsoft jvm, in netscape 4.8 they use netscape's jvm. I don't know
how it works in later versions of Netscape (and would love to know,
anyone, anyone, ..., bueler?) :)
Take care,

| Answer: It doesn't work in Netscape 6 or higher :)
From Cortona VRML Client FAQ:
--------------------------------
Why does Java not work in Cortona in Netscape 6?
Netscape 6 does not support Java for the plug-ins which were created for
Netscape 4.x. This means that Java functionality is unavailable in Cortona.
--------------------------------
So I guess given the current supported vrml browsers, deciding to use
JAI is akin to requiring your users use IE/Netscape 4.8 and Cortona. I
anxiously await Xj3D.
