I've taken this idea and used it
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slidingdoors/
(graphical rounded corners on menu tabs)
and this idea:
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/customcorners/
(rounded corners on content boxes)

I'm struggling to combine them; the lower border graphic
of the menus need to "play nice" with the upper
border of the content, and I can't get my head round it.

Has anyone already done this; an example
would be truly helpful.

I don't think I understand your question. But here's a different idea
on tabbed pages than what's on the link you gave. Nothing new or
earthshaking, just some ideas I've been experimenting with:
