Author background opacity + css

I am trying to get a background within a table transparent. I am using:

style="filter:alpha(opacity=65);"

The only problem is that everything within the table is now faded. Not my
intention. I would just like the background the be semi-transparent.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Filter" only works in IE. You'd be better off using a semi-transparent
gif or png as a background. But then, IE can have problems with pngs.

As for the 'semi-transparent' GIF, it's "actually just a pattern of
transparent and opaque pixels which fills the background of a table that
is floating over the background of the page. In this case you get about
a 50% opacity, as half of the pixels are transparent (and therefore half
are not). GIF transparency is an all or nothing proposition, a pixel is
either transparent or not. However, by mixing transparent and opaque
pixels you can effectively achieve a blend."

The above paragraph was taken from
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ps6/message/444 because they explained it
better than I could.

I hope this helped, Aron

VERY interesting. This is essentially a dithering technique using transparency.

Still not able to sort this out using a PNG, trans GIF. Does anyone know a
style sheet trick I could use. The one I listed in my first post also drops
the opacity of the text in the table.

be very careful using this. I tried similiar, with a background which had a
pattern, and got an ugly moire.
Of course a background with fine detailed pattern is a horrible choice in
many otherwise too, but...
