Author I'm back for another round
vMike

I have made some changes to www.cricketsshoes.com. (third round) Hopefully
you will think that I have made some progress. I have also changed the
layout to a mostly tableless layout. (Kind of a bear to get it to look right
in different browsers.) Seems to be ok unless the text size is increase to
the largest setting. Also, if anyone can tell me how to put a style tag
inside of a noscript tag without getting a validation error it would be
greatly appreciated) As always, I am looking for honest opinions. Thanks in
advance to any alties who take the time to take another look.

Oh my. That's MUCH better. There are some issues, but this page is a much
nicer site.

Keep at it!

You can't. Why would you like to do this?

I want to do this because if the user has disable javascript then I want to
set the display to none for one of the controls on my page and replace it
with a non javascript version. If I was programming code for this it would
be a simple if statement.... if script control1 else control2 ...but I have
no way of knowing if the user has script disabled without using javascript!.
It seemed simple enought to use style (to hide the control) within a
noscript tag (and if fact it works both in the body and in the head, but
doesn't validate either way). I guess there must be a different approach. I
am still researching it. This really isn't the group for this kind of
question, but I was just want to respond to your question.

(a) Looks OK in IE6 and Opera.

Two layout problems in Mozilla and Netscape:

and
http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/CR02X.JPG

(b) 'size conversions' and 'returns' CLOSE WINDOW won't work if JS is
disabled.

(c) The conversion table needs some correct mark-up. Look up <TH> and
<CAPTION>

(d) The alternative text on 'store hours 10-5 M-S 772.492.4010.' might
be better as '10am to 5pm, Monday thru Saturday; Phone 772 492 4010' for

Jake,
I move the returns and sizes to a non pop up page. That eliminates any pop
up problems and gets rid of the close buttons. TH tag added to size table. I
will consider doing the same for the privacy page. alt changed on store
hours. I will have to see why there was a problem on that one page for
Netscape and mozilla.

Thanks for you time and sugguestions.

Works OK in IE and Opera.

But in Netscape and Mozilla:
http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/CR03X.JPG (61k)

Try simply floating the 'returnstext' div to the left, and the sizetable
div to the right. That should give you what you want.

You're looking at this from the wrong end. *Start* with the no js
version, and pretend that js does not exist. That means forget the
<noscript> tag. You don't need it in a world with js. Then add js, and
use it so that it changes the page as you want. That way, when js is not
on, the page is already in the state you want.

Indeed. Use js to remove the element from the DOM, and add a new
element to the DOM that does what you want. Or, more easily, change the
behavior of an element from non-js to js.

In a ciwa* group, Jim Dabell once wrote that there is no good use for
the <noscript> element. I think he's right.

> This really isn't the group for this kind of question

You might get more detailed responses in a javascript group. There's
also lots of stuff on the web, but be careful. There seems to be more
bad advice than good about js on the www. Make sure you find the good.

I will try that. Odd but my Netscape (7.1) and Firefox(0.9.3) display
correctly. It is a bear trying to get all these browsers to work correctly.

Yes, that seems to be OK now.

Except for one thing. As you reduce the width of the browser window the
table correctly re-sites itself under the main text -- but you lose the
footer. Try it ;-)

You should be OK if you add 'clear:both' at the start of the CSS for the
footer div.

Much nicer than the previous version - I didn't actually comment on
that one - but there's a few things that I noticed:

(a) The "shop window" looks a little odd to me...for some reason it
reminds me of a Monty Python animation....I keep expecting the hat
to lift up and expose a head or something!

(b) The address reads:
966 Beachland Boulevard
privacy
Vero Beach, Florida 32963

...which may seem odd for text-to-speech or text-only viewers.

(c) Just for search engine rankings I'd change th <title> from:

"Crickets - women's designer shoes and handbags by Emma Hope, Miss
Trish of Capri and more!"

to

"Designer Shoes and Designer Handbags at Crickets of Florida"

or something close....Google puts a lot of emphasis on the <title>
and getting your keywords in there at the start would help.

(d) It's not immediately obvious that I need to click on the hat
or the shoes in the "window" to view the items. I'd consider some
more links to these sections of the site, and also making all the
keywords in the strap line: "Featuring women's shoes, handbags,
belts and hats from top designers." into links...again, Google will
like <a href="designer-shoes.html">designer shoe's</a> a lot more
than an image link.

(e) I run a 1280x854 screen and when I maximise the browser, every-
things is a little skewey....the light be banner at the top has
text to the far left and far right....but the menu underneath is all
to the left....might be better centred. Then you have the main shop-
window - all to the left, then the designers at the bottom is spread
right over the screen. Finally, the footer is all to the left.

You need to centre the shop window and the footer and it'll look a
lot nicer.

(f) Like the use of the designers names in <a href...> tags. That
will go down well with Google. Shame it couldn't be backed up with
real html file names like lily-holt-designer-shoes.html.

(g) Not too keen on the bright red on light blue on some of the
pages....looks a bit gaudy to me, but that's just personal taste.

Finally....I'm a bloke and even *I* would love a pair of Emma Hope's
Leopard shoes!

Actually, I *do* know the answer to that. And, imho, your point is
valid.

That said, it's not something I'd recommend for everyone. :)

Look at http://www.ibm.com/us/, specifically its DOCTYPE declaration and
the URI it points to.

You may not want to go that route, but there's your answer.

I wish there was a float center in css. I have had some trouble getting the
graphics positions right in different resolutions. I have not looked at 1280
but I will take a look.

I can easily do that with .net. All of my pages do not really exist on the
server, they are rendered at runtime. I can name them anything I want and
have the server generate the proper page. It will take a bit of time to code
but I like that idea. I did that on the main page, but called them qview...
I can simply change those the the designer names. Also, I was wondering. I
had the little dots on the online store page pointing to pages but I changed
it because I read the google doesn't like that. Is that true.

Much better.

I would put curtains around the window in the inset photo. -- that
would extend the pseudo-shop display more naturally.

The bare products to the right look...bare. You might try something
like 'cricket shoe' I just posted to alt.binaries.comp-graphics.

If you play with link attributes, you can make your menu more
interesting and obvious.

Agree with others about 'hours' representation, and the interrupted
address at the bottom.

I think 'webmaster' is usually a single word. :-)

This will center, but it's not float behavior.

I think this is what he's after - it's for the central "shop window"
part of the site and there's no content as such to float around it,
but he did want it in the centre of the screen.
