Author need advice on family website

I need some advice for a website my relatives asked me to create.
They're going to put several audio and video files from family events
on the website so our relatives and friends from all around the world
can access them. The problem is that we're using one of those free
sites like tripod and geocities because we can't afford anything else
at the moment. So we thought that we could mirror the site or
something. So that people in certain parts of the world each go to a
different website to get the files instead of getting them all from
the same place. But then we thought maybe we could make one of our
computers into a server and people could download directly from that
computer. The problem with that is that we're both on 56k dialup. But
that shouldn't be a problem if we make it so only 1 person can
download at a time and they would get about 3kbps which isn't too bad.
If we did it this way then we wouldn't have to spend hours and hours
uploading the files to various websites. Of course then there's the
problem that we only have 1 phone line and are therefore only online
at nights for about 11hrs.

So what do you think would be the best thing to do?

Chip in together by buy some space somewhere. There are places out there
that offer inexpensive hosting for less per year than a quiet dinner out for
two.

Running a server behind a modem is not an option. It may even be against
your TOS and you will be instantly found and cracked unless your security is
real up to date. Another thing to consider: dial up usually results in a
different IP address on each connect.

Cheers
Richard.

If you're on dial-up then using your computer as a web server is probably
against the terms and conditions of your ISP. Even most home ADSL
providers do not allow it. (Although mine does.)

Also, the vast majority of dial-up ISPs assign you dynamic IPs, which
means that your web site would constantly jump around the Internet,
breaking links every time your disconnected and reconnected your computer.

I did check the policy and it did say that was prohibited but could
someone explain why it would be? I mean is the problem about bandwidth
consumption or something else? I sit here several nights a week for
4-11hrs straight downloading homemade movies/videos from relatives in
Greece. I download songs from my cousin's band in Portland. I upload
to them pictures and videos from current family events and all that is
allowed.

What's the difference between doing that and turning my computer into
a web server or ftp for 11hrs a day and doing the exact same thing?
It's all the same thing. It doesn't make sense to me. I don't get it.
That's why I'm asking.

You need to ask your ISP these questions.

Cheers
Richard.

How else are they going to persuade people to upgrade to their expensive
business accounts?
