The latest version so far: http://www.nicoschuyt.nl/ontwerp
Changes:
- Added all the pages
- Draft of the content
- One picture for the hover effect in the main menu instead of two
- Different technique for positioning of menu and content box
- Extra attention for accessibility (like access keys and an extra link "go
to menu" on top)
- Tested extensively in IE6, Mozilla1.4, Opera7.2 and Lynx
- Site search with keywords (not complete)
Problems (known :-):
- In Lynx special characters like ë, é etc are not rendered correctly.
- The picture left on top displays to slowly because it's part of the menu
at the end of the coding.

Your comments are appreciated :-)
Nico
BTW FP again. Even frames are used :-)

I can't find anything wrong with it. Look good. I like the artwork, where
did you steal that from :-)

When is the English version due. I want to read what you're up to.

all, you are one of those <shudder> tidy </shudder> people. What happens if
you get thirsty or hungry. There are no left-over pizzas or coke cans on
that desk *anywhere*.

Nico - the images on your portfolio page totalled 129K, which made for very slow
loading on dial-up. The thumbnails are around 13 - 17K each when they could easily be
less than 5K.

Strange, you're the third one suggesting it's not mine. Seems like a guy
named Leo did something similar. I refuse to pay any attention to those
absurd insinuations of course.

That's the advantage of being Dutch. No one has the slightest idea what kind
of nonsense we write. About as effective as PGP :-)

The appropriate answer is "It took me a day to clean my desk" but, I must
admit, I *am* tidy. Not really in my nature, but if I don't I'll drown in an
enormous mess.

I disagree with that. It should be "In the hands of the novice/newbie it
*will* be a disaster".

Thanks for the critique!

You're right of course. Somehow I find it difficult to reduce the size and
(a little bit of) the quality. In fact I started with an average of 25K and
reduced them in 3 steps to what they are now. The final version will be
around the 5K you suggested :-)
Thanks!

I was being a bit tounge->cheek. If you stole them you found a good source.
If they are yours then they are very good :-)

Great!! I'm missing however the most interesting thing on that picture i.e
*you* :-)
Perhaps a good idea if the regulars in this ng (finally) show who they are.
Maybe even a webcam? I'd love to see Bonnie for example :0

bonnie seems to have removed her pic from her site which is a good thing
as i was wearing a hole in the monitor glass from constantly licking it.

*Always* work from the original images though, NOT from the ones you've already
resized, as the quality from those being opened and then compressed to 5K will be
awful.

Hmm seems I have a book somewhere called something like "leo's notebook",
maybe you left it laying around somewhere and I picked it up. ;-)

Looks good though and I like the colour scheme, in particular the non-white

I hate to be an old grouch Nico, but in the development pics you have up
in the portfolio section, I can see one of my pet peeves - using national
flags to indicate language preferences... I'd humbly suggest making text
links saying "Nederlands" and "English" instead. Flags do denote
nationality and have nothing at all to do with language. Switzerland has
3 official languages, and 1 semi-official one, my country has 11 (when
last I bothered to look, it could well be more now).

Otherwise, I like the site a lot :)

Not at all, comments were posted before I even got to check this thread.
There is really nothing more I could say besides that it looks good to
me, especially done in Front Page and all. And considering I know French
and not Dutch, a little hard for me to read ;o)

Actually, you're missing a bit of 'alt' text in your images, although I
see you're using CSS to show some of your images on the menu.

Sincerely,

Like I mentioned before: Dutch is practically as effective as PGP :-)
(Presumably even terrorists use it for encryption)

Most of the times I use alt="". Certainly on pictures that are only for the
presentation. Only when a picture has a certain function for blind people
(like the screen captures in Portfolio), I add some text.

Cheers, Nico

Although it wasn't an English flag[1]: it was a Union Jack (UK flag). In
the UK we speak English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic and Manx
with a smattering of Cornish, Breton and Cumbric.

Would a New Zealander instinctively click the Union Jack? What about a
Canadian? Might the Canadian accidentally click the Dutch flag because it
looks a bit like a French flag?

[1] The English flag is St George's Cross: a thick red cross (+, not x) on
a white field.

Probably not. Neither would an Australian. In fact when presented with a
New Zealand flag and an Australian flag side by side it is hard to tell the
difference (at thumbnail dimensions). The Australian flag has one more star,
and a small one at that.

Just don't forget to include a transcript of the audio file so those who
can't hear the mp3 have access to that info, too.

Well, as an American I get miffed at seeing the Union Jack always

people speak something quite different.... ;-)

Actually the Australian flag has two more stars: the New Zealand flag
portrays the Southern Cross in 4 stars; whereas the Australian flag
portrays it with 5 *PLUS* there is the huge 7-pointed Commonwealth Star in
the bottom left hand quarter -- 6 stars total, compared with NZ's 4.

Whatsmore, the stars on the NZ flag are red, whereas the stars on the
Australian flag are white.

All in all, the Commonwealth Star is probably the biggest give-away.

Well, India is the most populous English-speaking[1] country, with over 4
times the population of the USA.

[1] English is one of India's many official languages, and is the language
most commonly used for commercial and government purposes.

The W3C has its own weird brand of English.

Groovy, but IE isn't as kewl as what NS 4 does with system colors. :)

Wonder why "darkGrey" is lighter than "Grey"?

Well, if you go by the SVG 1.0 spec (which is the only non-draft[1]
web-related[2] recommendation to define lightgr[ae]y and darkgr[ae]y, both
spellings of gr[ae]y should be accepped.

For reference the followinc shades of grey (with their gray counterparts)
are defined by SVG[3]:

whitesmoke #f5f5f5
gainsboro #dcdcdc
lightgrey #d3d3d3
silver #c0c0c0
darkgrey #a9a9a9
grey #808080
dimgzey #696969

There are also threm shades of 'slategrey' with their alternative
spellings, which aren't really very grey at all.

So remember: nothing is ever black or white -- it is always one of seven
shades of grey.

[1] CSS3 also defines these colours, but it is a draft.

[2] These colours are part of the standard X11 palette, but that needn't
have any effect on the web.

[3] and CSS3, and X11.
