OK, a basic design for a site of my own :-) Your comments are appreciated.
At least (;-) one problem: In Opera7 the hover images don't show immediately
(a preload with 1px images didn't solve it)

The image at the top left overlaps your main header. If I narrow the
window, the menu items on the left start overlapping the main content. I
don't like the look of the fadeout effect on the box around your main
header, nor the faint "rainbow" background in the menu area.

When I scroll down, the links in the footer overlay the content. The
left column overlays the content, too. Try looking at this in a
smallish window (<800px wide) and larger text size.

About the overlap on window resize, I started with a design where the
contentbox has a left margin (21ex) and the menu box has a width of 20ex and
floats left of the content box.
Problem there was an overlap of content and menu after View->text-zoom->50%
in Mozilla. But perhaps that is to be preferred to the problems in a
narrowed window.

That dissapoints me :-(

Ehhh, that very faint brown to gray gradient can hardly be expressed as
"rainbow".
Do you have a better suggestion for the background?

Thanks for the critique!

Ahhh, I see. Only in Mozilla. I'll fix that.

I'll apply the first version (that one only gave an overlap of menu and
content in text-size 50% in Mozilla)

Did you notice any delay in display of the pictures on hovering the main
menu?

Thanks! Nico

After the first crushing critiques I swithed back to a former version:

Rainbow? I see very cool shading from darker to lighter from the left edge
inward, but do you literally mean "rainbow," as in red, yellow, blue, green,
violet? I don't see that in Netscape or IE.

In Opera, the images in menu items 2, 4, 5, and 6 work perfectly, but 1, 2,
and 3 have the same problem I encountered in IE. No rainbow here either. ; )

I'm not so sure it's the same problem you have.
In Opera, when the page is opened or after cleaning the cache
(File->Preferences->History and cache->Empty disk cache), the hover images
don't show. After refresh (and sometimes after clicking somewhere on the
page) the images show. When Opera is closed and started again with the page
everything is normal.
If I understand you correctly, you had the problem every time in
http://www.granatedit.com
BTW, did your clear the cache in IE?

OK, think I solved it:
- Clear the cache in Opera
- Open http://www.nicoschuyt.nl/test/ontwerp2a.htm
- All hover images should show up

That was IE. For Opera, I cleared the cache and closed and reopened Opera.
Seems a lot to go through, and most people won't.

You're referring to my message where I described a solution with preload in
js?
In that case there is no need for visitors to do that. It was just a way to
illustrate the solution works when a page is loaded for the very first time
(nothing in cache)
I'll be surprised (and disappointed) when you still have problems in Opera
with http://www.nicoschuyt.nl/test/ontwerp2a.htm (even with cleared cache)

You can't ask a visitor to do that... <g>
quote:

> On my page I get no hover effects in anything but IE.

That's because you don't have any hover code set for your:

a.menutext {

background-color: transparent;
color: Black;
text-decoration: none;
text-transform: uppercase;
font-family: "Arial Rounded MT Bold";
font-size: 70%;
letter-spacing: 2px;
line-height: 100%;
}

a.menutext needs a hover setting. I pointed this out to you about a
week ago, and you never responded to my post.

a.menutext link { }
a.menutext hover { } ...

IE probably shows the hover because it's broken.

I added it back in again, but the dots disappear and then appear. The
problem may turn out to be my browser though. Evidently nobody but me is
having this problem, but I still don't feel confident in putting up the site
with the background gif just yet.

I'm investigating getting another coy of the browser.

Sorry I have to say it. Use <Hx> for the title instead of <p>.
Why so many <div class="menuitem">'s instead of unordered list.
When I hover for the first time on the menu items. I don't see the hover
effect accept the background image (Opera 7).
With IE 6 there is about 1em space between the first menu image and the
logo.

Although the lay-out looks promising.

Well, I could of course but what's the advantage? Besides the headers should
reflect the document structure:
H1
H2
H3
H3
H2
H3
etc
It's a bit confusing perhaps to start with a H6 :-)

That's about 98.32998% of my visitors :-)
You mean the difference in the distance between the menu items? Same problem
in Opera 8
I'm impressed however by your technique!
I saved the coding. Not sure however if I follow your advice. It's even more
complex than my solution and I'm affraid I won't get it right.
I think my next step is getting rid of the menu box (the solution of Eric

The idea of using a list was too attractive to let it go :-)
I started from scratch and ended in something with less coding that renders
perfectly in IE6, Moz1.4 and Opera7.2 *and* accepts a strict doctype:

Each new approach / technique is complex e.g. writting our own database
