There's a red area and and brown one - bordered with white to the right and
bottom in ie6 but not in Opera or Moz
There is nothing on that page which needs tables for presentation

Since this is alt.html.critique:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...stern+Europe%29
Next, there's no tabular data on that page, so why are you using tables?

Page can be resized pretty small w/o having to scroll. Enlarged page
still has elements positioned as intended. The defunct attributes are
required for best viewing in older browsers (I think).

I would like to get rid of the white areas, but don't know how in
IE5.5 or IE6 (no white areas in IE5.01sp2). The table layout helps
keep elements relatively positioned to the size of the browser window
(unless too small, then you have to scroll). Thanks again for the
input. Spacey.

Stop making excuses.
I have sites laid out in CSS with 100% valid XHTML 1.1 Strict that display
perfectly in every version of IE4+, NN4+ and every version of Mozilla and
Opera.

What's your definition of "perfectly"?

Yeah, but that still begs the question 'why worry about it'? He presented
one workable solution to the problem.
And as for CSS with valid XHTML, could you do so, of the top of your
head?

As complex as they need to be.

Yes. I refuse to let a program do my work for me.
Its gotten to the point that I use DW mainly as an FTP program more than
anything else...

As an interesting diversion, I was testing the default style sheet of my
site in Internet Explorer 4 earlier today.
Now, my stylesheet is really optimised for Gecko (Moz/Netscape) and Presto
(Opera 7/future versions of Macromedia products!), although I have made a
few adjustments to get it to display on IE6.
As I work in IT support, you can probably understand my loathing and deep
mistrust of all Microsoft products, so imagine my surprise and delight
when I found that the stylesheet displays almost perfectly in IE 4!

I hear you. :) I also use it for the site-management and help files; my
biggest XXXXX about Dreamweaver 4 is that it doesn't recognize the XHTML
syntax, if it did, I wouldn't have a problem using it to write my code.
Right now, I use Textpad...

You know what's funny? IE 5.5 buggers up more of my CSS stuff than IE4 does
for some reason...

Ditto. It's like they actually *regressed* with IE 5.x!
The main problem with my site in IE 5.x is they seem to have buggered up
the width calculation for parts of the page that have stuff floated beside
them:
#content { width: 74%; float: right; }
#sidebar { width: 24%; }
In IE4 and IE6, this displays as two columns, one with a width of about
3/4 of the page. The other has a width of about 1/4 of the page.
In IE5 and IE5.5, the one that should be 1/4 of the page is instead 1/4 of
the available space -- i.e. 1/16 of the page!

It's probably not it, but you might want to check your math so that 74+24=100?

The other 2% is to allow for a small gap between the columns.
And I have a maths degree.
