I have a web site awaiting an update. According to the Pub help files, Pub
should have created a link to the site in my "Network Places" folderwhen I
uploaded the file. It didn't. PUB keeps trying to publish the site to my own
computer - it does not even look on line.

I spent almost an hour on the phone with the site tech support trying every
possible avenue. Pub isn't a big web site editor so no one was able to help -
and he did try everyone in his office!

Does anyone have a fix or workaround for this? Or a reason for the link not
being created in the first place? I don't want this battle every time I need
to update the site, so a fix is preferable!

You just got through directing the html output to your computer to test.
When you Publish to the Web, you changed the direction of the output to your
computer...change it back.

You completely lost me on that one. Change what back?

I tried to load it to the site but got the error msg "cannot connect to the
FTP server on the computer named 2-Lions.com". It continues with: "This error
message is usually associated with an attempt to access an FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) web site through a fire wall/proxy server and the proxy settings
are not set correctly to gain access." (I followed the MS link and there are
no help files on this error...)

Nothing has changed on this computer, least of all the firewalls; I get no
site logon option and the files keep ending up on my computer. I managed to
get an update loaded by getting onto the site itself and copying the files to
the host. There are some interesting page names now, but at least the edit is
up.

This cannot be the proper procedure. The shortcut that is supposed to be on
my network places doesn't exist! (per Pub: "when you publish a Web site to a
location on the Web or a network, a shortcut to the Web server or network
server will appear in My Network Places.")

[NB: I freed the page links, reduced the image sizes on home page and
reduced all page banners - now minus the fade I had. Hopfully the links work
noaw and it loads faster.]

I was suggesting that when you go to Publish to the Web, and you get to the
Save In dialog, that you probably had it set to save to My Computer or
Desktop, and that you should change it to My Network Places. If that is not
the case you can perhaps troubleshoot your issue by referencing the
uploading articles here:

That option never came up. It just started saving to my computer. Thanks for
the links. I'll read them as soon as I get some jewelry ready for the museum.
(did you read the site or just check the code?)

The update is loaded, however backarseward is was accomplished. Might check
the load times and the links - they are all free of overlaps. They work on my
system, the one in my studio, and the one in my bedroom. Same for 2-Lions
Glass, but we use IE7 (unless he avoided the auto update and still uses IE6).

Lookng at the site directory, I can see some monster files from the
backgrounds. Hmmm. Bruce knows how to rezise those... Aha-help kind of at
hand.

I'll keep poking at this for the next few days to see what needs to be done
per the links you sent.

Of course, all this may be irrelevant since my site has the same problem as
'goldplating'. I have PUB web forms but none of them work.

I know the FPSE files are available on the host, but I did not realize that
Pub would not recognize the forms it created when I loaded the file in the
format suggested by the program!. How foolish of me. (See, I did what you
said and looked at the other queries - see what happened!)

Should I redo the form or just upload the site in HTTP? Or start over in FP
programming. Could THAT be the reason the links don't work?

Kat,

You need to look a little closer at the Save In dialog box...the options are
there.

You know how to test your site in FF. Download and install it. And no, not
all your overlaps have not been fixed. The line that separates the two main
images on you home page still extends into your menu. If after fixing the
overlaps and if the menu's still don't work in FF, then I would guess that
you are using a code fragment, in which case switch to a text box with links
instead.

You have the links to the instructions about uploading in HTTP protocol, and
the link to David Bartosik's forms article, from my response to goldplating.
You have all the information you need in those articles.

When you are ready to upload via HTTP, then you will want to delete all your
old files off your site. Alternatively, do away with the form and just put
in a link to email you, and continue to use FTP uploading protocol.

Kat,

What difference does your forms not working make to someone using FF?
Most of the links don't work, including the one to click to get an
answer. If you want to lose potentially 30 percent of your visitors,
then don't test your site in a Gecko browser (Mozilla, FF, Netscape).

Again, just my opinion, but I find the Top/Bottom buttons annoying,
especially the bottom. Why would someone want to skip to the bottom of
the page if they haven't seven seen it yet? Why make it easy for a
viewer to skip a bunch of a page?

Depending on your server, you may need to enable FP extensions. I know I
would need to.

I don't think I have ever seen a site with a link to the bottom of the page.
I can't understand why you would want one?? To the top...yes, that makes
sense to me for longer pages.

Actually, the <bottom> came about because the links to the next page were not
working and it was easier for ME to check the continuing page when I did a
web preview.

Since you are the only ones who know the site is up - and since anyone not
using IE can't do anything with the site anyway - it doesn't make much

get something up that works, and redo the entire site in FP or whatever. At
least the Create It links worked and other browsers could use it. Then a
generic but working site would be up and I could get my work done - I'm a
jewelry designer, not a programmer!

What did I do wrong? Why don't the Pub links work with other browsers? I
read the stuff from Bartosik and thought I followed the instructions. Even if
I tested it in another browser, what good would it do? The basic structure of
the site is wrong.

And Mike, if you want your headache back, you are welcome to it. (Just
kidding ... hope yours is finally gone.) I was in the studio most of the day
playing catch up. I just don't need one of those on top of everything else.

Kat,

I imported your web site into WebPlus with very strange results.
Usually, it does a fantastic job, one that is almost like the way it
looks in the original program. But for some reason, most of your images
did not import. However, the links all work. I don't know the
significance of this - it's never happened before and I've tried
importing dozens of different sites.

If you are going to redo your site in a different program, I would not
recommend FP. It's a dead program. I would go with a product that is
still being updated.

As for the headaches, they have never really left. Eased up a bit, yes.
But I still am getting them every evening, just not so intensely. they
also seem to be mutating. For the first time ever, one of them hit at
6:30 am. Over the past 40 years, they've always been a late afternoon -
late night thing. One would think that after seven weeks, they would leave.

I know FP is dead or dying, but there were lots of sites written in it - not
that MonsterSoft cares about long term support. Their new program is
available for a test download, though. Thought I'd try that for the rewrite.
Guess I'm going to take it down until then or make a quick 'do in Create-It.
I'm tired of fighting Pub. I'm too old to try fighting an inanimate object -
I have a cat and the result is the same: zip.

What is WebPlus? (I told you I wasn't a programmer - haven't done that since
the 70's.*) Could the import problem be the result of having two copies of in
the site in the same folder? We've got so many graphics in there: pictures,
fonts, backgrounds, captions... What "very strange results" did you get?

Worse, I haven't even set up the shopping cart! No telling what will happen
then. Something about the sound of billions and billions of bytes and biits
crashing - or one hand clapping.
