cannot generate a picture in pub 2000

| grant walker 2007-03-21, 4:15 am |
| hi, i have pub 2000, i am trying to preview my web site. i push the preview
icon, a box comes upsaying it is prepairing a preview when another window
opens and says' publisher cannot generate a picture on page 1 into a graphic
for your web site.' it also says about the graphic being too large or the
computer low on memory.
i have 1 gig ram and lots of space on the hard drive so i don't think its
low memory, and the pics are small, and compressed in jpg format, they are
not large file size.
this message comes up for every pic on all the pages, when the preview shows
in the browser, there is just a box outline where the pic should be.
tia,
grant.

| Under Tools, run the Design checker to see if anything is causing problems.
I run a Publisher 2000 site, www.vanusa.org and if you would like easy
method to center your pages, let me know and I'll post.

| This works only for websites created with Publisher 2000 (fairly certain)
Each of your html files requires adding the <center> code after the existing
<head> code.
You can go into each html file and do it manually or get the free
Replaceinfiles program
and make it an easy chore.
"ReplaceInFiles" can be downloaded from:
<http://www.emurasoft.com/index.htm>
The four boxes require the following information:
Find: <head>
Replace with: <head> <center>
File Types: *.html
In Folder:
(use the button to go to the folder where the html files are located on your
drive)
The bottom four boxes can be left blank.
Note: Once the boxes are filled out, the entries are retained for the next
time you use the program.

| Thanks, Don.
I am curious, though. I know very little about HTML. Is a </center> code
required, too?

| I saw the </center> code in a manual editing of the files but the
ReplaceInFiles does the job nicely without it.

| hi Don,
thanks for the reply.
i have done a design check and there is no problem with any file size.
have you used pub 2003 or 2007?
do you know if i would be much better off upgrading, are there many
advantages to the newer pub versions?
thanks Don,

| Some years ago I accidentally gave to Goodwill my Publisher 97 which forced
me to replace Publisher; at the time it was 2000 that was being offered, so
that is what I got and never went any farther down the Publisher version
trail. Someone else here will have to give an opinion if a later version
will be beneficial to you.
I don't know what to tell you on your website problem.
Take care,

| grant,
I would suggest that you stay with Pub 2000 for web sites. In many ways it
is superior to the newer versions.
As per you pictures, a few questions. What version of IE are you using? How
did you insert your images into your Publisher publication? Did you link
them or insert them? Did you convert a Pub 97 publication to Pub 2000, or
start from scratch? Are you running Norton AV? If so you might disable the
Office plugins. What version of Windows? Did your publication ever preview
the site correctly, and if yes, what have you installed or changed? Perhaps
with a few more details, we can help you sort this out.

| hi David and Rob,
When I insert the pics, I go to to insert then pics from file to place the
pics in the publication, and all the designing has been done in pub 2000. I
don't have Norton and I have the latest version of Windows and IE7 with auto
update.
I have tried a preview on my other computer and all the pics come up with no
problem.
I may have to reinstall pub 2000 on this computer and that is why I thought
of updating to pub 2007.

| When you say that you have the latest version of Windows, that means you are
using Vista, correct?
A number of people are having problems with images not previewing in IE7.
You are perhaps the first that have had this problem with 2000, as the
others are using 2003 and 2007. Thus far I haven't been able to sort out
what setting in IE7 is causing the problem.
Try opening IE7 > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > and under
Multimedia make sure the "Show Pictures" is checked, and that "Show image
download placeholders" is unchecked. Try to preview your Pub site now. Does
that change anything? This is the only setting I have found thus far that
prevents the images from being visible in a web page preview. Please post
back and tell us if changing the image settings as suggested helps. Its also
possible it is some other security setting in IE7 or even Windows that is
creating the issue.
I really don't think that updating to Pub2007 will fix this problem for you,
as I think others with Pub 2007 have experienced the same issue. I think the
issue is with IE7. You could uninstall IE7 through add and remove, and if
you originally had IE6, it will rollback to IE6, but of course this doesn't
fix the problem with IE7. And if it is true that you are actually using
Vista, then IE6 is not an option.
If you are hot to update to Pub 2007, I would recommend that you do a custom
install, and NOT overwrite Pub 2000. Then be sure to keep your Pub 2000
files separate from your Pub 2007 files, so that you can go back to Pub 2000
if you choose. Don't convert them to 2007 format without keeping a 2000
formatted file as backup. I think you will find that you will prefer 2000
for web building, as it uses a different html coding engine, that produces
smaller files, that load faster, that have better cross browser support, and
better images, among other things. Pub 2000 is probably better for web
pages, and 2003 and 2007 for print docs.

| hi David,
sorry, I dont have the latest windows, I forgot all about Vista, I have XP
and XP media version but i keep them updated regularly from the microsoft
site so they are current.
The pics are in jpg format for photos and gif format for line art, they are
about 150 to 350 pixels, I am not sure about the actual file size but they
are not that big.
I have checked the IE7 settings and they are as you suggested, thoe the
problem is in the Pub 2000 end as all my other pics show in the browser and
it is in web preview in Pub 2000 that my pic problems start.
I have another web site that I designed in Pub 2000 and works really well,
www.grantsgallery.com.au and I don't know why i can not get the pics to
preview as they did when I designed this site.
regards,
Grant.

| Grant,
Nice site...and art work... When you open this old Publisher document, does
the web preview work?
If you would, please try one more thing. Save As a Web page, and direct your
html output to either your default Publish folder, or some other folder on
your hard drive. Then open IE > File > Open and browse to that folder and
open the index.html file. Do your images show then? Do you get the same
error message as when you try to preview the page? I would appreciate it if
you would do the test and post back. I am trying to narrow down the issue.
As I said, the issue of being unable to preview your site is related to IE7,
or a patch that you have downloaded. Problem is, I don't know which as I
have IE7 installed on a test partition, but it is unpatched. The only way I
can reproduce your issue is to uncheck the show pictures option.
One other thing you might check would be to see if there is an update video
driver for your computer. Right click your desktop > Settings > Advanced >
Adapter > Properties > and note the driver version. Then go to the
manufacturer site and see if there is a more current version. If so,
download and install...and test the web preview function.
Please post back the results of the tests I asked about when you have time.
It may come down to uninstalling IE7 in order to get the web preview to work
again. If you uninstall it via add and remove, you will have IE6, which
should work. Then if that works, you could try installing IE7 again without
patches...test web preview. If that works, then install the patches one at a
time, and testing web preview, until you find the patch that breaks the web
preview function. Tedious, I know, but that is the problem with some of the
patches from MSFT...they fix one thing, only to break something else.
Sorry I don't have a quick solution for you, but perhaps with your help we
can find out what it is that is breaking the preview function in Publisher
with IE7. Thanks.

| Check the jpgs in an image editor, make sure they are RGB jpgs and not CMYK.

| hi David,
| sorry, I dont have the latest windows, I forgot all about Vista, I have XP
| and XP media version but i keep them updated regularly from the microsoft
| site so they are current.
|
| The pics are in jpg format for photos and gif format for line art, they
are
| about 150 to 350 pixels, I am not sure about the actual file size but they
| are not that big.
|
| I have checked the IE7 settings and they are as you suggested, thoe the
| problem is in the Pub 2000 end as all my other pics show in the browser
and
| it is in web preview in Pub 2000 that my pic problems start.
|
| I have another web site that I designed in Pub 2000 and works really well,

| Did you try finding an updated video driver as suggested?
If that doesn't work, you can once again study the settings in IE7 and see
if there is anything that can be changed that will help the situation.
Assuming that you have the disks for Pub 2000, then try opening Pub 2000 >
Help > Detect and Repair.
If that doesn't help, then try uninstalling and reinstalling Pub 2000.
You can download and install all the patches for Office 2000.
You can then either uninstall patches or uninstall IE7, and thus roll back
to IE6 until we find out more information about why people are having
problems previewing Pub websites, and in your case even Saving As a web
page.
Let us know if you find a solution.

| Grant,
I posted a question to the IE newsgroup about the issues with IE7, and this
is the response:
"the user *may* have had a "horked" (dirty/incomplete)
install of IE7.
Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

I can't tell if this is helpful or not, but a clean reinstall of IE7 might
help in your case...

| hi David,
yes, I checked the video driver and its the latest one.
I will check out the IE7 as you suggest.
It is strange that this computer (home laptop) which is connected by
broadband and is auto updated weekly at the microsoft site is the one with
all the problems yet my other computer (work desktop) which is connected
only ocassionally by dial up and not updated does not have the problems.
I have a laptop at home and a desktop at work, both are running the same
version of office and pub 2000 and most of the other software is the same on
both computers. The home computer is connected by broadband and is regurly
updated. I do my design work on my home laptop and I can't see the pics,
then when I take the designs via cd or memory stick to my work desktop I can
see the pictures, web previews and everything works fine.
I think my work desktop computer is operating an older version of IE because
I haven't had it connected to the net for a number of months now and pub
2000 works very well on it.
I look forward to your reply,
Grant.

| Grant,
I find myself hoping that the problem you and others are having with IE7, is
how it was installed. I posted my last list of suggestions before I posted
the question of this issue to the IE newsgroup. As I perused the many posts
from the many people who were having all kinds of problems with IE7, with
all kinds of programs, it became obvious that it is going to take a while to
shake out the problems with IE7. It is also clear the IE MVPs really don't
like the way IE7 is installed as an automatic update, and feel that many of
the problems are associated with that. Perhaps that is why I have no
problems with previewing pages with IE7 in Pub 2000, 2003 or 2007. I
downloaded and installed IE7 manually, and do not allow automatic updates.
I appreciate you reporting back about the video driver. That helped
eliminate one possible reason. Now if you could make the time to read
through the various resource links provided by PA Bear, and uninstall,
download IE7 via the link and reinstall as per Sandi's instructions, perhaps
we will find the solution. As I said, I can't reproduce your issue, so I
have to rely on your help and others that are posting these problems to try
the different fixes, and report back. I will appreciate it, and so will
others who will be posting in the months ahead. Thanks.

| Hi David,
I will try the uninstall and install of IE7 and let you know how it goes.
I have noticed that there is a narrow bar at the top of the preview page
when i open my email and web browser, it says that pics have been blocked
'to help protect my computer security, Internet Explorer has blocked this
website...etc.' This warning has just started appearing at about the same
time as the problems with pub 2000.
regards
grant.

| Grant,
Have you tried clicking on the bar, and telling IE to unblock the pics? I
have previously guessed that there was a new security setting in IE7 that
was stopping the preview. This seems to confirm it. Please try it again, and
this time note the specific warning message and post back. Perhaps the good
folks on the IE newsgroup will know where to change that setting. You could
also experiment with the security settings yourself. Thanks.

| hi David,
yes, I have tried allowing ie7 to open pics, it still does not work.
I was just reading today an artical about ie7 and the auto update of
microsoft programs. the author said that there were problems with auto
updating and that you should look at and read about the software thats being
updated to make sure its ok, but how do I know if the updated software is a
problem?
My other computer that does not have broadband and auto update is working
well, this computer with auto update is not.
Grant.

| Grant,
It seems every day, one NG or Forum has a post from a user about a
problem happening after auto-updating a MS program. MS is releasing
patches (which I guess is good) but without enough widespread testing to
see if it breaks something else. Problems get reported and the hardware
or software manufacturer is left to fix the problem. I have auto-updates
turned off, even though it means a reminder that my computer may be at
risk. I've been using it for over three years though without a problem.

| Grant,
Its kind of hard to help you when I ask you specific questions, give you
specific tasks, and then you don't report back any details.
Work through everything I have suggested. I have no more suggestions to
offer at this point.
