Author hyperlink errors

Hi there,
I'm trying to update an old web page that has a number of
out of date links embedded in various pictures (jpgs, gifs) which no
longer function. I sourced the original material stored on my computer
and updated all of the links, saved it in web page form, and uploaded
the data to the web site. Problem is, when I tried testing the updated
links I kept getting error messages saying that the files can't be
sourced! It shouldn't be looking for files, it should be searching for
the relevant web address.

As an alternative, I've simply gone back to the source material, used
the 'view as web page' facility to test the links on my own machine,
only to see the same thing happen. It wants to find a file in the
'Administrator/setting' section of my system. Here's the exact error
message -

File not found
Firefox can't find the file at /C:/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/
pub3116.1/www.metromonorail.com.au/monorail.asp.

The reference to the monorail is in fact the name of the jpeg in
question.

Oddly, all the other embedded links that didn't require change work
perfectly, yet if I try and change them to something new the same
problem comes up again.

I also experimented by trying to create a new web page from scratch,
and the same thing happened - when I tried embedding a hyperlink to a
web site in the pictures, the error messages would pop up.

I should point out that the web addresses are clearly accurate - if I
type them into my browser they work perfectly.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I've used various versions of
Publisher for years to create dozens of web pages, and have never
encountered this problem before. This particular page is one of the
very few where I've embedded links within the pictures, and as its
been some time since I did it perhaps I've simply forgotten part of
the process. Seems odd though, as it's usually a straightforward
process.

I use Publisher 2000 by the way.

Thanks in advance

You didn't mention the secondary drive this time, and added the fact that
you are trying to preview the site with FF. What is your secondary hard
drive? Is it a USB external drive, or what? Nor did your explain what you
meant by "I sourced the original material stored on my computer". What
Windows version? What version of IE and FF? Please be more specific.

Try moving your Publisher file to your C drive. Open it, and try preview. No
joy, then select the image with the problem hyperlink > right click >
hyperlink > remove. Then select the image again > right click > hyperlink >
make sure "A web site or file on the Internet" is selected and paste in
http://www.metromonorail.com.au/monorail.asp in the Internet
address...field. I find it easiest to avoid errors if I browse to the site
and copy the link from the address, and then just paste it in the internet
address field. Try a web page preview now and see if you get the error.

Then since you are using Pub 2000 go to File > Save as a web page and direct
the html outuput to either the default Publish folder, or any other folder
you can easily find on your C drive. Open IE > file > and browse to the
folder and the index.html file you just created and open. Does it work in
IE? Try the same with FF. Does work in IE but not FF? Then the problem is a
setting in FF.

If you get the error message in both IE and FF by testing the index.html
file in this way, then go back to your Publisher file and delete the
original image, and insert it into your page again, add the hyperlink and
test again. Make sure that you are inserting the image, not linking to it.

You also said that you uploaded your website and that the link doesn't work
there either. Please post the URL of the problem page and specify which
image is supposed to have the link.

I made the assumption that the problem image/hyperlink is on your index.html
file. If it is on another page, then when you get to the troubleshooting
step of browsing to the problem page in IE, then open the appropriate page,
not the index.html file.

I don't think so. That is a web address, not a file on a hard drive.
Someone has save that as a bookmark or link to your pub3116.1 folder.
Also, that web page was not created in Pub.
