Author image issues

Hi. I have searched and searched for an answer to my problem. Here's
what happened:
Using Publisher 2003. Website with images up, no problem. When
updating got messages about embedding images. I thought finally what
could it hurt? Said OK. Boy what a mistake! My images do not show in
web browser now. I have changed all through graphics manager to linked
and even replaced the jpeg images, re-uploaded and still do not get my
images. As a matter of fact, images are now being duplicated when
publishing to gifs. I have went in on my host side and deleted the gif
files and even uploaded to overwrite existing jpeg files to ensure the
images are in my index files but they are still not connecting. When I
view my web pages ready to publish, all images are in place - they get
lost once uploaded.
Am I going to have to totally start from scratch on my website in
order to get rid of these issues?

Pub 2003 always makes copies of the images in various formats, that you
insert into the page. The theory is that it will serve up the best image
depending on which browser is used to view the page...with mixed results. I
would suggest that you delete the index.htm file and the entire index_files
folder from your host, and upload fresh html files.

Well, I did as you suggested prior to this posting. I deleted all
publish folder items, index, etc. on host as well as on my desktop.
Website is www.positivetomorrows.com

My first guess would include that you are using a master page image...don't
use a master page in a web publication. That is not the way to put a
background in your web pages.

I am not using a master page. I know master pages are not functional
for websites. I'm guessing I will have to delete all images and insert
new ones. I would suggest to everyone to NEVER embed images. I had no
problems until I tried to correct embedded images by relinking.

I guessed that you were using a master page based on how your background
image views on the index.htm page. When I view it full screen, the blue
color background does not go full screen. You have some white padding on the
right side of the screen. I guessed that this image was in a master page.
How are you inserting that background? If you are inserting a large picture
and building your page on top of that, that may be the problem. And just
because it may have worked before, doesn't mean it will always work.

Just for giggles, try removing that blue back ground, and try inserting a
solid blue color via Format > Background. Then republish and see if that
makes any difference.

I didn't quite follow your description of how you messed up your images. Do
they load when you do a web preview?

I would try an experiment. I would do a File Save As and save the Publisher
file under a new name. I am guessing that whatever you did to the images
might be fixed in the process. Open that new file, publish new html output
after deleting the old from your webhost. Don't be tempted to depend upon
overwriting files and folders...take the time this time to delete the
index.htm file and the index_files folder in the root directory. Be sure to
upload both the index.htm file and the index_files folder.

I don't remember if you said you have already done this, but you should also
go to Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and "Allow
PNG..." .

And if you are really ambitious, then you should eventually optimize your
images. If you did not resize them before you inserted them, then you should
compress the images from within Publisher.

MSFT Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/p...1266301033.aspx

David Bartosik reference: About halfway down the page read: What is the
Picture Optimizer Tool for Publisher 2003? :
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/...icle.asp?ID=564

Try all those things, and start with a cleaned up host, and see if that
doesn't fix your image problems.

You know, I did go back into photoshop and reduced my images and
replaced all in my folders and then inserted again into publisher - I
saw that some of the images were huge and thought maybe that was an
issue. But even though the images were large, they did show in web
preview as well as in my index.htm and index files where I publish
prior to uploading to host. And, I had compressed images prior to all
of the issues that popped up, with no problems. The vml, etc. is
unchecked. I did go to my host again, and deleted all files and
uploaded fresh files - same problem. It's like once I said embed, all
problems started to the point of no return. Here's another food for
thought: once you say embed, that's it forever. In all my attempts to
replace images with fresh jpeg files, Publisher automatically embedded
them. My guess is what you are suggesting, start another site with new
name, insert the images fresh and go from there. I was just hoping I
wouldn't have to do that.
Thanks for the suggestions and will post again to let you know how it
goes for your future reference.

And yes, I'm using a standard background image with a star design so I
saved as an image and then inserted. I've heard from a few people
about the white space to the side. Couldn't I just extend the image
rather than change to blue background? I'd really like to keep that
background. I'm going to try that in my new website - ugh!

Try the file Save As to a new file name as I suggested. My hope is that
whatever you did to mess up your images will be fixed when the images are
copied over to the new file.

Its good that you already optimized your images, and you unchecked the
suggested options. Its also good that you tried to delete all your Pub html
files off your host before, but right now it doesn't appear that the
index_files folder is either uploaded or you uploaded to the wrong place
because the images are not loading. I am not suggesting starting over...not
yet anyway. When you insert an image, it is embedded. You don't want the
images linked.

And sure...keep your blue star background, and potentially keep having
problems. Regardless of what software you use to build your site, there is
going to be limitations on what you can and cannot do. Sometimes you have to
abandon a design technique and find another that does work. That is part of
web design. I just suggested that you try the experiments to ascertain where
the problems are in your design. Once you figure out where the problem is,
then you can figure out a workaround to get the design you want.

Good luck.

Yippee! It's all there again. Here's what I ended up doing:
photoshop'd each image, reduced size, optimized, and saved as jpeg
with exact name of image to match my placeholder, brought all images
to front, deleted entire public file on server, created a new one and
published again. This time all is there! Hope this thread helps anyone
else who comes across these problems and thanks to you David F for
helping me work thru this.
