Author Mac users can´t view publisher 2
Curt

I´ve published a couple of websites using Publisher 2003 on a PC with windows
XP, but it seems mac users can´t view the site properly. Images missing etc.
It works perfectly when viewed on a PC but not from a mac.

Any hints on correcting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Tools > Options > web tab and uncheck "rely on vml..." and "allow
png...". This will fix most of the cross browser issues.

Download and install FireFox: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
It is a relatively small download. Then test your site with both IE and FF,
and if it works in both of these browsers it is likely to work on most
browsers, and you have covered the majority of users.

If you still have compatibility issues, post the URL of the problem page and
the specifics of what isn't working, and we will help further.

Hi David,
Thanks a lot for trying. I´ve done that, unchecked the boxes and downloaded
Firefox but it still doesn´t work. The main url is www.bollnascamping.se. The
frontpage is OK in PC and Mac, but not in Firefox - pics & links missing.

The subpages, for example "bathamnen" (
http://www.bollnascamping.se/index-filer/Bathamnen.htm ) are missing pics and
links in both Mac and Firefox. Firefox even requires an authentication to
view the page...

Everything is OK from a PC.

All the best,
Curt

Curt,

This issue of the login/authentication has come up in the past, and again
today with another poster. I don't remember the fix, but I think it may be
that you are using a Master Page in your Publisher document. It appears that
you have put your banner and your navigation bar at least, on a Master Page.
If so, try moving everything onto the main page and see if that doesn't fix
both the login issue and the fact that these items are missing in FF. Please
let us know if this is the case. Master pages should not be used in a
Publisher web page. Reserve that design technique for print documents.

And while you are at it, I would suggest organizing your site in a different
way. As you want to provide the site in two languages, I think you will find
it easier to organize and manage, and it will be more user friendly if you
build your site with two Publisher documents...one English and one your
primary language, Swedish?. Upload your Swedish version to your root
directory on your host just as you are doing now, but create a subfolder on
your host called "english" and upload the English version of the site to
that subfolder. Then on your home page at least, where you have the two
flags, and HEM and ENGLISH, insert hyperlinks that allow the user to move to
the other language. Then your home page for your default Swedish language
site will be http://www.bollnascamping.se/ or
http://www.bollnascamping.se/index.htm and your English version would be at
http://www.bollnascamping.se/english/index.htm. Here is an example of a
Publisher built site in English and Spanish: http://www.somoscapazes.org/
Notice the English text box in the upper left corner. Click it and it takes
you to http://www.somoscapazes.org/english/index.htm where you will see an
Espanol box/link that takes you to the Spanish version.

And finally, be sure to compress all your images/graphics before uploading:
Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/p...1266301033.aspx
And realize that when you use special effects like shadows that the images
will be converted to a low quality copy of the original image with the
shadow as part of the image. In other words, consider dropping the shadow to
get the best quality images.

And finally as you test your site in FF, if you find other links that are
dead, then see if you are grouping that link, that design element with
something else. Go to Arrange and Ungroup, and this typically will fix the
dead link issue.

Let us know if the Master Page fix takes care of the login/authentication
issue. This issue has only come up three times now, and I would like the
feedback.

Curt,

And others: A suggestion that may help a bunch. If you are having
trouble with a file, upload that to your site and provide a link in your
message. It's a lot easier to view a file and see how it is designed
than guess what the problem may be.

Hi David,

Wow, what an answer - I´ll do my very best and let you know the results as
soon as possible. Seems like I´ve got some work to do on the site :-).

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your assistance.

Best,
Curt
