If you don't know what it is, you don't need it!
It is a DB that can be called and written to. Some common uses for it
would be to host a forum, store and verify Passwords, use as a guest
book, hold a list of inventory items, their costs, price, etc., for
e-commerce - those type of things. Usually, a PHP program will get data
from and write information to the DB.
If you are looking to decide when web host you want, it should include
at least five free mysql DBs, unless it is a Windows server. I think
they run asp and use SQL or some other DB.
