Why would my website update only publish part way, not online?

| I updated my website recently (Publisher 2003), in early December, and it
worked just fine. After I had a web optimisation done, suggesting
improvements, I completely overhauled my site and tried uploading. I
received the message "(Publisher could not save the file - check URL or
network connection and try again)", but it didn't show up online. It did,
however, show up in My Network Places, and in the admin area at my web host
site. Not all of the pages showed up there either. When I talked to my web
hoster, he looked at my files and said that it was saving them to ftp instead
of http. I'm confused as to why that would happen, when it wasn't before. I
also have to admit I'm a complete neophyte when it comes to computers and
code.
Any ideas?

| Chances are that when you redesigned the document, you did something that
makes it choke when you tried to upload. One common error is a design
element overlapping the work area and the scratch area. Run the design
checker under tools, and see if that finds a problem.
Then delete all your old files off your web host site. This means the
index.htm file and the index_files folder, but not any other file or folder
that might be there, as they are probably server files that are necessary
for your webstats to work and such. Then try uploading again.

| Yes...if you delete the files, then you will not have a site to see until
you replace them, but it may be that your new files are conflicting with the
old, and that is why you need to delete them. If the design checker finds a
problem with your Publisher file, you can try to upload again, but if that
doesn't work, then the next step is to delete the old files.
Besides, you can always generate new ones from the backup copy of your old
Publisher file that you made before you changed it, right? I am being a bit
sarcastic here, because I fear you are probably like most people...you
didn't back up your old Publisher file. So...in the future, remember to
backup, backup and then backup again. Burn your old files onto a CD so if
your hard drive crashes...or should I say, WHEN your hard drive crashes, you
don't have to recreate the file. It can be as simple as doing a Save As a
new file name before you make major changes. Then if you mess up, you can
always go back to the original.

| Another thought that might make you more comfortable. Make your connection
to your site, and copy the current files on your site to your hard
drive...download them, and save a copy. Then you could always upload them
again if necessary.

| Sounds like you have lost a hard drive or important files in the past. Good
job on the backup...

I have a backup on my server, my hoster recommended it when I first started
my site. I've also got copies on my external hard drive, and in my other
partition on my computer.
