So - - I just made up a 4 page website, naming it index.htm - and addes
christmas music to each of the pages -- - the few times I saved as a web
page, and uploaded to the server, the music worked fine - - then, after
making a couple of additions, ie, hyperlinks, format changes, etc., I
resaved. I have the sound playing when I "webpage preview" in Publisher,
but, when I ""Save as Website", the item00_ files do not show up, nor does
the site play when I click the htm icon --- course, I am afraid to load up
now that the sound files are missing - -
Any himts from out there in Publishland??

When you say "Save as Website", does this mean you are going to the file menu
to save it? You should be using "Publish to the Web" the little globe icon
with the arrow pointing to the north west on the web tools toolbar. What sort
of files are these music files, midi, wav, etc?
On the web tools toolbar and under 'web page options', is the music file
listed under 'background sound' and in the correct location? Are these files
on your server?

As it turns out, with sheer luck, I came across a dialog box that inferred a
requirement to save as a publisher file first, then "Publish to the Web".
That worked - - seems a bit odd, but, that is the way it is.
Maybe that little icon you are referring to saves the publisher file as part
of its macro.
As to your question, amazingly, I am not able to open Publilsher's midi
sound files - - When I search "My Music" only the *wav files show up - - but,
then if I can open, include and save functioning *mp3 sounds into the html
webpage, if I do an "all files" listing of the folder, and include it - -
pretty interesting that work around. Must be a MS bias against mp3 files. -

To make changes in your website, you go back to your original Publisher
file, make the changes, and then produce new HTML files to replace the old
ones on your webhost. You don't edit your old HTML files. You might want to
spend a little time perusing the Publisher and the Web topics within the
Table of Contents under Help.

Publisher does not support MP3 files for background musac, only MID and some
WAV files. If you want to upload your MP3 files and make them available to
people, reference: Including external files in a Publisher web:

I read your note - and dbartosik's, which are very informative - - but, maybe
I have gotten to an intuitive level in my webpaging (I can't always remember
or explain the steps I take to execute some task; try explaining walking..or
playing a video game...) such that I am able to make my own shortcuts or
workarounds intuitively.

In any case, I am able to include the *mp3 files, which are then converted
to a "file0001.__", (the type of file which I cannot discern) and which then
is included in the webfolder, "filename_files", as are pic files and pages 2
(in html) on. Can't explain this -- and why it seems to be different from
Dbartosik's.
I use ftp to upload all files, and file folders; though, I sometimes use the
http utility on the ISP. FTP works rather well, once the nuances of the ISP
upload requirements are figured out.

You are right though - - if I want to get good at this, and get the most out
of Publisher, I should get a manual from the bookstore. - - anyone out there
got any suggestions, including MS approved references.

I'm glad you can figure things out "intuitively", but sometimes it helps to
read the directions, and the directions under Help are very good at
explaining some of the basic concepts of using Publisher to build a website.
I have learned a lot of things through trial and terror, but then after the
fact realized I could have saved a lot of time and frustration if I had just
read the instructions that were available. To each their own...there is
frequently more than one right way.

So, are you saying that the mp3 files do play in the background when you
view your site?

I don't know of a book, but here are some other references besides the Help
section in Publisher:
You can reference: Publisher 2003 Help and How-to:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/p...=CL100632931033

And David Bartosik has lots of good content. Use key words to search his
site for articles:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/

I also use Google groups to search the group for answers. Once again, try
different key words:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...isher.webdesign

Good luck.

Yes -- Go to http://www.stpeterparish.org - - can't explain why, but, when I
did the "all files" choice, mp3 files were shown, and I chose one of them,
they ended up getting incorporated.

Thanks. It sorta works for me, but with a dial-up connection it takes way
too long to download, and then stops when I scroll down the page. Guess it
doesn't matter, as the point is that in at least some cases the mp3 files do
work. Thanks for the education.
