| I do too. I didn't mean to confuse people. In an ideal world, they should
resize and optimize the images in a third party image editing program before
they insert them into a Publisher 2003 webpage, and also use the compression
feature in Publisher. I suggest that because I suspect that most people do
not fully optimize the images for Publisher, and that there are probably
other graphics on the pages that will benefit from the compression. Using
both, you get the fastest loading pages.
FWIW I use Pub 2000 and import my images rather than insert them. I find I
get better results that way, but that is probably beyond what most people
want to do when they choose to use Publisher to produce their sites.
Thanks for your comments...they are always helpful.

| I try to help when I can. Longtime user of p2000 and now also have 2003 (a
tad on the noobish side still with 03).
I use IrFanview for quick resize, rename, optimization but PS to actually
edit an image. I find IrFanview much quicker on batch ops.

| Before I read these replies
I published to file then used IrFanview to resize images from about 4-6 Megs
to about 30-40 kb
When I put smaller images into pub it looked terrible, but on the web it
looks OK
That's why I did it afterwards
I am helping a friend out, he had to do it for the first time, other
previous person that did it may have used a different ver of pub
As the old site was html and when I published with 2003 they were htm and it
did not update
I had to delete old site first with FTP program
Your saying theres a feature somewhere in pub that will reduce size, but
maybe best to use third party
http://outsideinn.ca/
thanks for all the info

| Ha...If the truth be told, I still use Pub 2000 for everything except
testing purposes and helping out here. It does everything I want to do, and
I prefer it to Pub2003 for web building especially. I know, Pub 2003 is
"better" for print publications, but I have found no need to switch...guess
I am one of those, if it ain't broke, why fix it, people.
I have Irfanview installed, but rarely use it. I use PS Elements for most
things and probably a half dozen other apps for one or two functions. For
example I like the "warmify" quick fix in Picasa from Google, and haven't
been able to duplicate it in Elements. It seems like every time I buy a new
piece of equipment, I get a new photo editor or organizer, and have just
quit installing them, especially after loading a couple that took over the
defaults...

| John,
I am not sure I am reading you right, but I can say that even as I write
this, the images on your home page have not downloaded yet, using a dial-up
modem.
First, I am suggesting that you resize, and change the resolution of each
image before you insert it into your Publisher document. The Pub 2003 HTML
coding engine works in sometimes mysterious ways, and it will actually make
copies of your images in various formats including PNG. The goal being to
provide the best image depending on which browser was used to load the page.
To see this, Publish to the Web, and direct the HTML output to a folder on
your computer, where you can open and study the files it produces. You will
find several copies of each image.
The goal when you resize an image in Irfanview is to decrease the size to
about the size you will be using in Publisher, and I would suggest using 96
dpi at about 30% quality for a JPG to start with. Rob may have tested this
more, and found a better setting...you should experiment, until you get the
smallest file that still looks good. You should be able to get much smaller
than 30-40 kb unless the image covers the whole page. My 150 pixel wide JPG
are usually close to 4 kb.
After inserting the image into Publisher, Format > Picture > Size Tab and
make sure the Scale is 100% or less. 100% is ideal, but over 100% and you
will have a poor quality image. Also, I suggest using 96 dpi instead of 72
dpi, because the Publisher coding engine will convert your 72 dpi image to
96 dpi. As a general rule do not convert JPG images to GIF format.
If the old site had html files, then it was probably Pub 2000 or earlier.
Pub 2003 uses .htm by default....and absolutely you should delete all the
old files off the server before you upload the new...at least until you get
the site to work correctly. After that you can use the incremental uploading
feature.
Before you produce the HTML, go to Tools > Options > Web Tab and uncheck
"Rely on VML..." and "Allow PNG...". This will help you produce faster
loading pages and images, and may be one of the major reasons your images
are not loading more quickly now.
And finally, yes, Pub 2003 has a compress graphics function, and it will
probably help even after optimizing your images. As per my original reply,
"Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web pages":
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/a...1266301033.aspx
Now that is probably more than you wanted to know ;-)

| Sorry John, I actually meant this reply for Rob...whoops.
I would try Tools > Options > Web Tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and
"Allow PNG...". before anything else. That alone would explain a lot about
why your images are loading so slowly.

| So far I like 03 a lot...so does my printer buddy. He says it's got more
commercial stuff. I'll find out soon enough I have to finish my non-profit's
Playbill in 30 days.
The copy I have came with Digital Imaging 10, which I haven't installed yet.
If I doo I think my machine will be on image editing overload, but am
tempted to try it. What can I say? Hi my name is Rob and I'm a software
junkie. Hi Rob!
I have Elements as well. But, still end up going back to PS6.
Oh,,,dang I just realized we're wayyyy ot on this..sorry.

and
| I prefer it to Pub2003 for web building especially. I know, Pub 2003 is
| "better" for print publications, but I have found no need to
switch...guess

|
| I have Irfanview installed, but rarely use it. I use PS Elements for most

| been able to duplicate it in Elements. It seems like every time I buy a

| Believe it or not they eventually load. I think his biggest mistake is he
allowed PNG, and the reason you don't see the images loading in IE, is that
the PNG files produced are large as 2.2 megs. The biggest problem with the
Publisher HTML coding engine is how it deals with images, and the use of
PNGs...
Try loading http://outsideinn.ca/ in FireFox. The images loaded in FireFox
are JPGs, not the bloated PNG versions.

Can I convert them from png to jpg in irfranview then substitute file

| How do I make publisher publish jpg instead of png?
Just relized reason for being so slow
I only have publisher file, not the seperate images
If I import png then pub exports png is that how it works?

| John, I think I/we have overloaded you with too much information. You do not
edit the images AFTER you Publish to The Web, and produce the HTML. If you
do not have the original images, then forget about trying to optimize them
before inserting them into your Publisher doc.
Let's back up and take this step by step.
1. First step is to open your Publisher file, go to Tools > Options > Web
Tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and "Allow PNG...".
2. Then read the article: "Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller
Publisher Web pages":
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/a...1266301033.aspx Then
compress the graphics in your Publisher document as per that article.
3. Use FTP to access the web host server, and delete all the old Publisher
HTML files. This would include your index.htm file and the index_files
folder.
4. Go back to your Publisher file, and Publish to the Web, produce a new
index.htm file and index_files folder and use FTP to upload these new HTML
files.
5. Post back when you are done, and we will look at your site again.

| I want to thanks you David for all the help
I followed your advice reducing images pub file was 18 meg after compressing
it is 3 megs
When I pre view as a webpage it works great, but when I upload to server it
does not display, its a server setting or somethig
Since I could not get it to work I uploaded backup that I made before I
started screwing arround
everything works now fast as they are small jpg's, but of course its not
updated
the only page they ever need to change is the rates and dates to update the
calendar bookings
is there a way I could just change this page without exporting the whole
site to web
or an easy work arround?

| Hi John,
I haven't had much time, but I did look at the site while you had the Pub
2000 version up. (That was smart of you keeping the backup HTML) It appeared
to me that even in that version, the image quality was lacking. Yes, they
loaded fairly quickly, but I suspect that when the originals were inserted
they were not at 100% size, or something. Anyway I see that you have the Pub
2007 version up again.
It appears that compressing the Pub file was successful, and helped to a
point, with the overall size of your HTML output reduced to 3 megs. Good
job.
Did you also uncheck the VML and PNG options?
Are you satisfied with the quality of the images as they look when viewed on
the internet now, in the Pub 2007 version? If yes, are you just wanting them
to load even more quickly? From my perspective, they look pretty good...once
they load.
Let me check on a working assumption...you were given a Pub 2000 file, and
have been updating this file with Pub 2003, correct? You do not have access
to the original images?
I ask this because from my experience when I have opened a Pub 2000 file in
Pub 2003, and then tried to produce HTML files, I have ended up with some
unpredictable results, especially with images. Answer the above questions,
and I may have a workaround that I want to test to see if perhaps it would
help.
As to your other question about being able to change just the Rates page,
there are several possibilities. If you are using HTTP uploading protocols,
and your webhost has FrontPage Service Extensions, and are using the
incremental uploading option, then if you made a change to the Rates page,
in theory only those changes would be uploaded, not the entire site. I say
in theory, because I am quoting David Bartosik here...I haven't tried it
myself. Go to Help under Publisher and type in "incremental" to read about
this feature. He has also said that you have to go through the upload
process a few times before it starts working. Read more here:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80555.aspx
You also have the option of pulling that one page out of your main Publisher
file, and producing it with a second Publisher file, and building the site
with multiple files. This would mean that you could then update the Rates
page without touching the main site. To see an example of this approach,
here is a link to another poster who has built both an English and a Spanish
version of his website with two Publisher files, and linked the two
together. Click on the English button in the upper left corner to see the
English version: http://www.somoscapazes.org/index.html
Here is an article by David Bartosik explains the method: "Building a web
site with multiple Publisher web publication files":
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/a...1/16/81264.aspx
If you want to pursue this approach, there are several ways you could apply
it to your site.

| John,
You can try that, but I suspect it is not going to help. Answer the
questions I have asked in my other response today, and perhaps I can offer a
better way.

| John,
Check one more thing for me. Assuming that you have a copy of the original
Pub 2000 file, open it in Pub 2003. Then go to one or more of the images,
and select it...just click on it once. Then go to Format > Picture, and the
Size tab. Look under Scale, and tell me if that picture is at 100%, or what.

| I put the old one back over night that I first backed up, because I could
not get site to work (wrong place on server)
As soon as my head hit the pillow at bedtime I relished what was wrong so
first thing in the morning I rectified the problem
putting updated site as your instructions, and I"m happy with it, it could
be better but its acceptable and can be easily updated
Actually the pub file I was given is 39megs not 18 , and was reduced to 3 on
compression
I don't have the pub 2000 file, but I opened up the 39 meg 2003 file and all
images are set at 50%
What is pub 2007 like anything new worthwhile?
Thanks again for all the help

| If you are happy with the site, then so be it. However, if you want to work
with the images more, then go to that original file, open the Graphics
manager, and it should list all the images on the page. If you select one of
those pictures, and the dropdown arrow, then details, it will show you
whether the image is scaled, the file type etc.
You can go to that image that is embedded in your Publisher file, right
click, Save As Picture, choose a file name, and the file type, to your
computer. You now have a copy of the image as it appeared in your Publisher
document, and the reduced scale, and probably an artificially high
resolution. Because if you then go back to that image on your Pub doc,
Format, Size Tab, and change the scale to 100%, and then look in the Graphic
Manager, you will notice the scaling will reflect 100%, and the resolution
will be lower...probably what it was when it was inserted into your document
in the first place. So, again right click it and save it.
You now probably have the original image as it was inserted into the
Publisher document, plus a reduced scale version of that image. I would
experiment, and open both the full scale image and the reduced scale image
in your image editor, change the resolution to 96dpi, and resize it, try the
30% compression, and you now have an image that you can insert into your Pub
file that is probably more optimized than it was before. You can again use
the compress graphics tool in Publisher, and then Publish to the Web, and
check the size and loading speed of those images against what you have now.
I am sure that you are tired of this whole thing, but when you get inspired
again, perhaps open your original Publisher file, do a Save As a new name,
and then delete all the pages except for one of the pages with multiple
images, such as http://outsideinn.ca/index_files/Page564.htm
Then do another Save As to that one page Pub doc. You can use the first one
page document as representative of your site as it is now, and the second
pub doc as your test site where you insert newly optimized images, as above.
Then do a Publish to the Web for both files to folders on your computer, and
compare the images in the HTML output in terms of size and quality. You may
notice less PNG copies, or better JPG images, but through that testing, you
will eventually determine how best to optimize the images to get the fastest
loading pages, and still retain the good quality with the images.
OK...I am done now. Its up to you from this point...good luck.
