| I am using new computer to setup my new website, but I'm having multiple
problems.
I was albe to set up a new ftp folder as instructed going to my hosting
server, but everytime I safe to web, it goes through the motions, but then
says, "could not save to the web".
Any suggestions?

| Lynn,
Its hard to say what the problem is, especially since you managed to upload
your sites with your other computer(s). I would suspect that it might have
to do with a firewall, but also...and this is a wild guess, are you using
"passive" mode when you upload? I was setting up a new FTP account the other
day, and forgot to change that setting, and had problems. Check your old
computer for how you had things setup.
The best reference is the trouble shooting article here:

| Well I contacted HP and they said it is an XP problem. They do this to me
every time. They blame Windows and Windows blames them.
At any rate, my other websites that I do from WIN98 computer are HTTP, not
FTP.
This one is FTP. I am using Publisher 2000. It goes all the way to the
progress bar which says 100% and then I get the message, cannot publish etc.
I did try an article by Bartosek (sp?) yesterday, that is what I mean when I
say I have tried a few things. There is also another website I was directed
to by HP called annoyances and it's about XP problems. They gave a course of
action but that doesn't work either. I am not techy so don't know really
when they say to do something in the registry, etc. I don't mess with the
registry.

| In Dave's article he says it is for Publisher 2000, yet when I click on
Tools, Options, there is no WEB tab. Perhaps he can help with that.

| Sorry, but your description of what you have tried is unclear, and makes it
pretty tough to suggest other possible solutions. I would suggest again that
you check the firewall built into Windows XP that does not exist in 98, or
other firewall that came with your new computer, and make sure it is turned
off or set to allow you to upload your files. I would also suggest that if
you know how to use HTTP uploading protocol, then use it again. Why use FTP
now? I would also suggest that you go to your webhost and look at their
knowledge base or FAQ section and their instructions about how to upload to
their servers...especially if this is a different host than the one that
hosts your other sites.
Otherwise, go back to the three articles I referenced especially the
troubleshooting article by David Bartosik, and read it carefully, and check
the steps you are taking until you find the step you are doing incorrectly.
Make sure you are uploading to the correct address, watch for misspelled
words, using Upper case when it should be lower case, including spaces where
there should be no spaces, etc. Many times it is something really simple
that you can miss the first time...and the second time you look at it. So
look a third...
Good luck.

specific questions to get better answers.

| Sorry I guess I wasn't clearn. Windows XP Home edition does not support
HTTP. It only supports FTP. There are no "WEB FOLDERS". The only option
you are given is to set up an FTP.
I followed David's FTP instructions from the link you gave me. I wasn't
referring to anything outside of our conversation.
Additionally the web hosting I have for this new page is FTP per GoDaddy.
The other ones are HTTP. I cannot use FTP with my old webpages because it
shuts off the front page extensions (fpe) then I have to go back into my
account with GoDaddy and reinstall the fpe.
Working from the new machine with Windows XP Home edition is totally
different.
As I said I set up the FTP folders in My Network Places. I will try again,
deleting them and reinstalling.

| OK, I see what you are talking about now and can see the confusion. You are
correct, there is no Web tab under options in Pub 2000. The directions to
"Go to the Tools menu, click on Options to open the Options dialog, go to
the Web tab. On the web tab uncheck the "Rely on VML..." option, and uncheck
the "Allow PNG..." option. Checkboxes under Encoding and under E-mail should
also be unchecked." do not apply to Pub 2000. The coding engine in Pub 2000
does not produce VML or PNG images, so you can ignore that part of the
troubleshooting article.

| As far as I can see, David, the article only gives instructions for what to
do on the Web Tab. There is no such monkey in Publisher 2000.

| Lynn,
David's articles about uploading reference Pub 2000, 2002 and 2003. However
as you have noted there have been changes in the three versions, so the HTTP
and FTP uploading articles can be confusing. For now, just go to the
troubleshooting article and see if that helps:

| Lynn,
I thought I would also respond to this post. Though I don't use HTTP
uploading, and thus don't have a thorough understanding of the process, I
can say that Windows XP does support HTTP uploading. From my limited
understanding "web folders" were replaced with IE6, and the equivalent is
"Network Places"....I think! I think that you probably have IE5 on your
Win98 machine, and of course Pub 2000 help describes the uploading process
with "web folders", as IE5 was the browser when Pub 2000 was developed.
Perhaps go to GoDaddy support section and read the instructions on how to
use FPSE in the uploading process and you will get a better understanding of
how to use HTTP uploading protocol with IE6. And perhaps double check that
you are writing the login address correctly. Most hosts have a different
address for ftp...
Sorry I can't be of more help, but perhaps this will lead you to a solution.
