Linking to a web based photo gallery (Continued)

| Just write an absolute link to the photo gallery folder(s). Right click the
image > Hyperlink > Existing file or web page > browsed pages and type in,
or paste your link...something like this:
http://www.3795castlebutte.com/inde...llery/index.htm
After typing the above I tried the following link:
http://www.3795castlebutte.com/index_files/
and voila, there are your galleries, or slides or at least part of your
jalbum html output. You uploaded at least some of your jalbum files to the
"index_files" folder which should contain your other Publisher pages and
supporting images, but you want to direct the link to the index.htm file of
the gallery.
To keep things organized you should put your photo gallery files and folders
in their own subfolders on your site...and delete all those old files before
you upload your Publisher HTML files again, or you are likely to have
conflicts. Personally I would put your "galleries" folder alongside the
"index_files" folder, instead of within it as the link above suggested. Then
if you are going to have additional galleries, create subfolders within that
folder. For example, say you have two galleries: sunsets and sunrises. Then
create a folder called "photogallery", and within that folder create two
subfolders called "sunsets" and "sunrises", and then upload your jalbum
files (all the output including the index.htm file and slides, res and
thumbs) to each of those folders. Then the links from the thumbnails on your
Photo Gallery main page would be:
http://www.3795castlebutte.com/phot...nsets/index.htm and
http://www.3795castlebutte.com/phot...rises/index.htm
Then in the future as you add galleries, you can just add a folder under the
photogallery folder for each new gallery. And by the way, I use jalbum and
this how I have things structured, but with different folder names.

given that you apparently are going to have a lot of images on your site.
Also, for what its worth, you can also set up your Publisher Photo Gallery
page links to open the jalbum photo albums in a new browser window, so when
the viewer is done and close the window, your main website is still there.

getting a 404 error...turns out I didn't need to include the home directory
folder in the address. After I entered the correct address (subfolders)
everything linked perfectly! It also helps to remember the complete file
name with no TYPOS:)
In regard to your folder and file suggestions...I basically follow what you
outlined already. I just got confused and put the gallery in the index_files
hoping that would correct my linking problem.
Since I am using the Jalbum I have another question...
I will try to get the album/hyperlink to open in a new browser window (per
your link) BUT if I tweak my album in Dreamweaver like I have in the past,
inserting a hyperlink "return to galleries page" what should I link it to:
the index.htm or the index_files.htm? Should I link to the local or remote?

Good job! And don't feel like the lone ranger. It seems that learning how to
write links correctly is one of the common problems of building websites
regardless of what program you use. Once you get used to it, it becomes
easier to reason through.
I must admit that I use absolute links most of the time, because I can keep
these straight in my mind. And so I would link back to the page where the
viewer clicked the link to see the photo album....which right now would be:

| By the way, I noticed that you did get a couple galleries posted, and see
that you are a professional photographer. I would then assume that you have
lots of image editing software, and would suggest that you optimize your
images for the web before you insert them into the Pub file, instead of
using the built in compression option. In fact, if you want the best photos
on your site, you should import your optimizes images, not embed them. Here
is another reference article: "How To Link Images In Your Publisher Web
Page":

And you can also add an ALT tag, and open the images in a new window...and
more. Here is an example where you would import an image that you stored on
your site in an "images" folder, that is 120 pixels by 60, that when you
hovered your mouse over the image it would show "someothersite.com" and take
you to that site when you clicked on the image:

Absolute works for me! Makes sense to have it all link back to the URL.
Needless to say my site at this point is a "dummy', but now I know how to put
the REAL one together. I even got my PDF to attach on the "about us" page!

| I'm kind of a semi-professional but, yes, I work in PS CS2 and only shoot in
raw format, so I always capture and output sharpen. I will look at the link
you suggested about importing vs inserting.
