Author Pub 03 doesn't seem to compress

Pub 03 doesn't seem to compress files to the same extent as 02 did. I don't
get the message that used to appear in 02 about files being compressed when
publishing to web. I have added the compress pictures item and compressed
all the pictures but I still end up with a pretty large file. Prior to my
current update the pub file was 55mb and reduced to 14mb for the web. My
current file has more than doubled to 125mb with only about 20 actual pages
added and it reduces only to 44mb. It also now creates 'pages' way beyond
what is really in the Pub file, 2271 as opposed to the actual 166.

I have looked through help and all settings that might seem appropriate but
only find reference to compressing pictures.

Running XP on a new gateway 540gr.

Thank you.

Version 2003 uses different coding technology from that of 2002 SP1. A page
generated from 2003 using File, Publish to web..., will be a heavier page
then that of 2002's File, Export as web page...

that's by design and unchangeable. 2003 also changed the handling of image
files which created the need for the compress picture tool, but you seem to
have found that already. It reduces the image size which in turn reduces
overall web page size sans html size.

2003 will create more files as well, again by design and unchangeable.

Thank you for the explanation and sorry it took so long for me to respond.
New email program and just now found 'newsreader.'

Thanks again and guess I'll have to go back to 02. Will I be able to open an
03 file with 02?

Yes, the file format of 2002 and 2003 are the same.
If you use 2002 be sure you are loaded at Service Pack 3 level.
And be sure to use File, Export as web, to get the smallest html code
possible.
