Author .hdaccess files

I've been told by my web host that I need to remove hidden .hdaccess files
from my website (created in Frontpage 2000), in order to use their security
features and password protection.

I've uploaded my website to the host server using SmartFTP, but cannot
locate the hidden .hdaccess files. Any idea what they appear as or where to
look?

Many thanks,

Julie
