How to pass a value to another Webpart?

| Hi all,
I'm trying to pass a value (in my case, the number of items in a list) from
a dataview webpart to another one.
Unfortunatly I just don't know how to do it. I tried to create a basic
connection (one that filters the target webpart) and mess things up to make
it somehow pass the value, but that just doesn't work.
If anyone as a hint on that, it would be very, very welcome.
I looked into Frontpage help. There's a topic about webpart connections, and
several scenarios are given as examples.
I feel the scenario named "alternate data views -> An example of a cell"
corresponds to my needs but I just couldn't find anything explaining how to
do that.

Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Etienne
