is there a website where you can type in a URL and see how many page hits
that site receives?

Have you tried searching for information about that on Google?

Not that I know of, but normally your host will provide site statistics -
it's probably worth asking. If not, there are scripts you can easily install
on your pages to track visitor statistics. This is a good one:
http://extremetracking.com/ and there's a free option.

Hit counters are notoriously unreliable, however.

I didn't recommend a hit counter. That's a full-fledged statistics service.
