Author FP View of CSS Site

I am trying to learn the use of CSS and am getting along slowly but
surely. One issue I can't figure out is the design view in FP.

I created a one page site from a template with CSS attached.
Everything works fine but in the design view, the page appears as if
there is not enough room on the 'table'. The text and buttons wrap to
the next line and a strange column appears to the right of the area.

When I click on preview, everything appears fine as does when I publish
the site. If nothing else it has got me working a lot closer to the
coding but it is a bit infuriating. Any enlightenment would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
