Have lost the ability to make color backgrounds for the page in the Theme
and for shared borders. It worked five hours ago, but five hours of
thrashing has not helped.
I think the problem for the theme is that a blank background picture is
being used, but I don't know how to get rid of it. If I look at page
characteristics it shows background picture checked, but because of my theme
use, I can't change it.

The shaded borders color shows up fine in design and as soon as I do a
preview, it disappears.

Modify the Theme, Save As a new theme, turn off the old theme, apply the new
theme.

Thanks for the suggestion.
The solution was to remove any entry for Background Picture in the Theme.
(I think I did that in theme "pictures".... removed the default.)
After that, both the shared borders and the theme background worked and
could be published.
